Great Homemade Christmas Gift ideas

DIY Christmas Gift Ideas

The Christmas season is approaching fast, and it's probably about time you got on top of your gift buying, or maybe you're into gift making? For the last few years I have made Christmas gifts for my extended family, in-laws and friends, ranging from food gifts to fashion accessories. I always love the look on peoples faces when they realise I made the gift myself. Hand made items show more heart than simply bought gifts, plus if your making a large quantity it often works out a lot cheaper, saving a little money always helps. But I really like the idea of giving a personal gift, that I have made specifically for the recipient.

But sometimes finding the perfect DIY Christmas Gift idea can become a little tedious and time consuming, so here I have compiled my top 5 gift ideas for the Christmas season (although these could be gifts for any time of year really). I find nearly all my good ideas via Pintrest, which leads me to the original source of the creative handmade gift idea. So I cannot claim that any of these ideas are my own, I leave the tutorials to other creative people! You will find all the tutorial links in the below article. I hope you enjoy the hub and find a perfect gift for all your friends and family.

1. A Cooking Kit

Although this is specifically a bakers kit, you could really make any kind of cooking kit, just add the relevant cooking equipment and some ingredients. Maybe an italian food kit, with some fancy pasta, or a curry kit with some spice mixes. Plus don't limit yourself to an oven glove, although this is super cute, you could try packing it in a nice wok or mixing bowl. Just be creative and have fun compiling a great useful gift I found this beautiful example over on The 36th Avenue - (this link will take you to a whole selection of other Christmas craft ideas too). You can also find the exact list of What Bakers Want over on The Art and Soul of Baking where the original image came from. Anybody who loves to cook or bake would be so happy to receive a gift like this, I know I would!

2. Food in a Jar

This is specifically Cookie Mix in a Jar which I found via These are hugely popular this year if trends on Pintrest are anything to go by. I have actually used this recipe myself to make up a load of christmas gift jars for all the friends of the family. They make such a cute idea for christmas gifts that the person you give the gift to can have fun baking for themselves. You stack up all the dry ingredients so they only have to add the wet ingredients, mix it all together and bake. Yummy Cookies. Plus its not just cookie mixes, you can find a whole range of recipe mixes for jars online, ranging from cereals to soups and even chilli mixes. Just adjust the recipe to suit your friends tastes, easy to tailor any recipe really. Then just pop on a cute label or tag and some pretty embellishments to the lid and they are all ready to be gifted!

3. Home Made Bath Bombs

Home made cosmetics make a great gift for everyone. They lack chemicals so are often far more natural and therefore much better for your skin than a lot of store bought items, plus they look cute and it shows you have put some real effort into your gift. This photo and craft idea comes from Martha Stewarts Website. They really are quite simple to make and only involve a handful of ingredients, all of which are easy to acquire. Make them any colour you please and with any scent you like. Perfect gift for all your girl pals, or teenagers! Just package up a few in a little box or cellophane bag to make it look a little prettier and more expensive.

4. Tile Coater DIY

I have seen this DIY on a number of different sites and blogs, but the best tutorial I found was on The Cottage Home. Just think how happy you would be to put your cuppa down or a super pretty hand made coaster. A little pack of these tied up with ribbon would make a great gift for anyone. Plus you can use any pretty paper or fabric to adorn the tile, meaning you can tailor it to a specific persons home d├ęcor or just give them a pretty set you know they will love. To make them even more personal you could use photos on the tiles instead. It is a super simple and cheap craft, that even the kids could help with.

5. Home Made Jewellery

Home Made jewellery is a great gift for any lady in your life and you can no doubt find the perfect piece to suit the tastes of everyone. It shows you have taken the time and effort to make them something they will really like and that is really unique. I often gift handmade jewellery and the possibilities are only limited by your creativity. There is a huge selection of DIY's on the internet but I thought I would just point you in the direction of this website, she makes and demonstrates how to make some really simply, cheap and beautiful jewellery pieces. Mainly bangles like the ones in the image. Check it out for some great ideas. Or have a nose around on pintrest for some other tutorials.
