Halloween Deer Costume

Updated on September 23, 2015

Show Your True Colors

Halloween is a wonderfully magical holiday. It is celebrated during a time when the world is really showing off its colors through the fiery hued leaves. This holiday is a great time for you to do the same thing!

When I was younger dressing up for Halloween was a wonderful excuse for me to be whatever I wanted. I have in the past dressed up as a black cat, a fortune teller, a sphinx, a firefly and medusa. My newest obsession however is dressing up like a deer! I have always been fond of woodland animals, and choosing to be a deer for Halloween seemed like the obvious choice. Depending on how you want to go, this costume can be sexy or as cute as Bambi!

The How To

The deer is a truly beautiful and elegant creature. This animal has been featured in many films and cartoons and there are many variations you can take on this costume. For example you can add a red clown nose to become Rudolph, or simply add a Christmas sweater and bells to be a reindeer. Increase the size of your antlers and be a moose! Ask your friend to dress up as a skunk and be Bambi! The look can be dressed up or down but the basics are quite simple! You only need a few things that are easily obtained to pull off a lovely costume in no time at all. With a few easy steps you will have a costume perfect for any occasion that requires dressing up!

Antlers Make this Costume

The most important aspect of the deer costume is the antlers. The antlers are what will truly let people know what you are right off the bat. Nothing is worse than getting the question "so what are you supposed to be again?" The good thing about this is that if you can pull off the antlers, you can pretty much wear anything you like! To go along with the animal theme simply wear shades of brown and tan. I like this idea because that means I can wear this costume to work! (I'm required to wear jeans but a brown shirt is all that is necessary to pull this look together).

Some Halloween stores carry felt antlers but I find them to be a bit too "cartoony." So unless you're going for that look I would suggest making your own. A very easy way to do this is to find some branches outside and tuck them into a hair band. Viola! Branches that have many smaller pieces branching out look best. For a fancier look you can spray paint the branches gold or silver. Leave them as it for a more natural look.

A good makeup application can really enhance any costume. Luckily for this costume you don't need to buy any special colors! A natural palette works perfectly. For my makeup all I used was a black and white eyeliner pencil...that's it! I used the white eyeliner to have a sprinkling of white dots across my cheeks, and the black eyeliner to make the lower half of my nose and upper lip black. Quick and easy!

In the following video some lovely browns and bronzers were used were used along with highlighting certain parts of the face to create an even more dramatic effect. The video has the entire makeup process explained step by step in an easy to understand matter. So, even if your not a pro with makeup you will be soon! I practiced on myself beforehand to make sure I had the look I wanted to achieve, and you can always do the same thing. Don't be afraid to experiment!

Finishing touches

You have your antlers on, your outfit picked up, and makeup're just about ready to go! There are a few more things you can do with this versatile costume to make it extra special and stand out from the crowd. For a more whimsical effect, add bands of flowers and leaves around your hair. For laughs, have a friend dress up as a deer hunter for the perfect couples costume. Don't be afraid to get creative this Halloween! Use your imagination and have fun.

What a cute idea! I loved the makeup tutorial. Very professional look using everyday tools.

This is such a great costume idea - so much better than something bloody and gory, in my opinion!
