121+ Happy New Year's Words

Updated on December 12, 2016

Out with the old and in with the new! This is the attitude we have an opportunity to take on each year as the calendar reaches the last pages. The transition from one year to the next is an exciting time, indeed. It’s almost as if we can have a brand new start at whatever we decide on, and often times, people set goals that are referred to as “New Year's Resolutions.”

Not only is the new year a perfect time to set new goals and expectations of oneself, but it’s also a wonderful time for gatherings with friends and family! You might be thinking “but isn’t that what Christmas is for?” Well, certainly, but one last hurrah at the end of the year is the best way to tie the year up and whisk in the coming year!

Fun With New Year's Words

With any holiday comes traditions and celebrations, and with celebrations comes the need for games. Some games require word banks! Whether you're a teacher, a homeschooler, or are just trying to plan some activities for fun, here’s some ways you can have fun with New Year's words:

  • Spelling bee: There’s plenty of big words associated with the new year, so depending on age level, pick a list of words and plan a spelling bee!

  • Word search: Word searches are great for all ages! It’s a great time-filling busy activity for the classroom as well. Make it a competition by setting a time limit and either the first person who finishes it or the person who finds the most in the allotted time period wins!

  • Crossword puzzles: Just like word searches, crosswords are loved universally across all age groups. It’s just a matter of making the hints and the words appropriate for the learning level.

  • Word scrambles: Mix up a list of words and see how many everyone can decode correctly! I also like the idea of turning this one into a competition on who can finish first!

  • Banner/crafts: Since New Year’s Day comes with festivities, what would a party be without some awesome decorations? You can make decorations with certain words like “Happy New Year!” of course! This goes for scrapbooking the occasion, as well.

  • BINGO: I’m pretty sure everyone who’s anyone knows how to play BINGO, so with this kind of BINGO, everyone can choose words from a chosen word bank and write them in the blanks, then they mark them off as they’re called.

  • Charades: Like acting? Get into some crazy antics with your friends, family and peers by acting words out of a hat. Easy! (Well, depending on the word!)

  • Pictionary: Okay, so we’re not all artists here, but that makes it that much more fun! You are assigned a word that you must draw and your team must guess in 60 seconds in order to get points.

Having fun with New Year's words is easy, as long as you have a list of them! If you are in search of some good words, here is a whole list of terms most commonly associated this time of year and all the festivities it brings!
