The best way to wish a happy birthday to someone you love ... Happy birthday Ida!
More candles would have caused a fire
You raised me up!
I tried to think of the best way to wish you a very happy birthday and was at a loss.
I didn’t want to write anything trite like “You’re the boss applesauce” so
I thought about one very impactful moment and words you probably don’t remember …
“She writes like a college student.”
Words can hurt
Until that point I had heard all of the negative declarations like
a) You don’t look like the rest of them (my sisters)!
b) Why are you the darkest one?
c) If you don’t learn to play the piano, you will be washing dishes for white people
d) You don’t dress as good as your sister.
(stopping to cry for a minute)
You gave me confidence to prepare for the rest of my life. I’m sure some wish I were not so confident.
I hope this feels like a party
Your impact on my life
I tell my students that I am beautiful and so are they. When they tell me I look nice or I have on a beautiful blouse, I say, “I know!” They love to hear me say, "I know!"
I do hope that you get many visits, calls, cards, and warm hugs.
I am where I am because you were where you were
When I needed someone to be there.
Since I can’t be there, I can't sing the birthday song.
You are the wind beneath my wings
Happy birthday Ida!
I hope everyone who reads this will respond with, “Happy birthday Ida!”
