Halloween Costume Idea: Zombie Fifties Housewife Costume

Updated on March 22, 2018

Kitty's favorite holiday is Halloween. She's been making her own costumes and studying Halloween as a holiday for over a decade.

Fifties Housewife Costume with a Twist

Halloween is a time to be creative and cute, at the same time. If you've been thinking about dressing up in a fifties housewife costume for Halloween this year, why not try it with a sinister twist? Put together a simple and unique costume - go to a Halloween party or to your office in a zombie fifties housewife costume!

I dressed as a dead fifties housewife last year for Halloween, and I can tell you that it was a hit at my office (yes my work allows us to wear Halloween costumes, and it's awesome). Not only was this costume very cheap (I had most of the items needed already in my closet), but it was easy to wear and pretty comfortable too. Not to mention that I was the only person who was dressed in a dead fifties housewife costume!

Putting the Zombie 50s Housewife Costume Together

The dead fifties housewife costume offers many options and allows you room to be yourself. The first item you're going to need and of which NO zombie fifties housewife could do without is - the dress! My fifties housewife costume dress is actually a vintage 50s dress that my grandmother picked up for me at a yard sale, but if you do not have the time to look at dozens of yard sales for vintage dresses, try these options:

  • Amazon (options posted below)
  • Etsy (do a search for vintage 50s dresses or rockabilly dresses)
  • Modcloth (they have amazingly cute vintage repro dresses)
  • (super cute and super stylish vintage repro)
  • Make your own from a vintage pattern!

Fifties housewife costume dresses should be form-fitting at the top with a full-circle skirt, or they can be form-fitting throughout (in an hour-glass shape). You can find fifties housewife costume dresses in polka dots, stripes, cherries, gingham, pastel colors, and even in gothic patterns.

The next 50s housewife costume necessity is the apron! No dead fifties housewife costume would be worth its salt without a little waist apron. You can find aprons in the most adorable patterns and colors all over the internet, at thrift stores, and even in some department stores. Check out the awesome options at Amazon below. If you're a DIYer, aprons are extremely easy to make. And if you can find some vintage fabric or even some fabric on clearance at your nearest Walmart or Joann's, this is an awesome option for your dead 50s housewife costume and a piece that you can wear over and over again for costumes or just to bake in!

Dead 50s Housewife Costume - Bloody Makeup and Accessories!

You can't be a zombie fifties housewife without having the appropriate accessories and make-up. So let's talk blood and guts...or...I mean, shoes and accessories.

A pair of pin-up retro heels or kitten heels are your best bet for a zombie fifties housewife costume. Or if you wanted to be super comfortable and cute, get a pair of maribou feather slippers or even espadrilles!

Other zombie housewife costume accessories could include: a cupcake pan (with gory cupcakes, of course), a jello mold (you can get jello brain molds online for an ultra-gory effect), curlers for your hair, red lipstick, and a spatula.

And of course, do not forget the zombie make-up. You'll want to white out your face and arms, neck, etc. whatever is showing out of your dress. Put dark black or green circles around your eyes, using green and black eyeshadow. You can also use black zombie blood or red blood make-up to run down the sides of your mouth and splash all over your costume. I use the washable stage blood so that my costume isn't ruined after the first wear.

The hair-do of a zombie fifties housewife costume has to be the most fun part of the entire look! There are so many ways for you to style your hair to look extremely vintage. Check out Youtube for thousands of tutorials on Rockabilly hair and Vintage hairstyles. You can do pin-curls, victory rolls, pompadours, the Bettie Page look, even the Rosie the Riveter bandana look. The way I did my zombie fifties housewife hair was simply went to bed with soft rollers in my hair, woke up, removed the curlers, ran a comb through the curls, sprayed it, pinned the bangs back and BAM. Zombie Fifties Housewife costume and hair in no time!

nighthag - Bummer that Australia isn't so into Halloween as America is. Not everyone loves Halloween in America, but pretty much every kid does...and a lot of adults are coming around to the idea. Thanks for the comment!
