How to Choose a Baby Shower Theme
Hosting A Baby Shower
A new baby is on the way and this joyous occasion will be celebrated by gathering friends and family for a baby shower. When planning and organizing a baby shower, choosing a theme for the party is a big deal to ensure this fun time will be remembered and talked about many years from now.
As the host of a baby shower, it is important to determine the answer to some basic questions to ensure an appropriate theme is chosen.
First Thing To Consider When Choosing A Baby Shower Theme
Does the expectant mother have a theme preference?
If she does, be sure to incorporate her wishes throughout the planning process. If the baby shower is a surprise, talk to other friends and family. If the mother-to-be does not have a preference, there are other things to consider when choosing a theme.
Answering The Following Questions Will Assist In Choosing A Baby Shower Theme
- Is the mother-to-be having one baby or multiple babies? There are many fun ways to incorporate a party for twins, triplets, etc.
- Is the gender of the baby known? Knowing the gender of the baby could certainly help in choosing a baby shower theme.
- Will the father-to-be attend the baby shower? “Couples Baby Showers” are becoming more common nowadays. If the father will also be in attendance, determine if a theme that incorporates both parents would be more appropriate.
- Will there be additional showers held by others? If there will be more than one shower, determine if the theme should be similar or different.
- Is this the first baby shower for the mom to be? If not, determine what theme may have been used previously. Chances are that the mother would prefer a totally different theme that does not duplicate previous showers she may have had.
- Where will the baby shower be held? Indoors? Outdoors? At a home? At a restaurant? At a church? In a party hall? The location of the baby shower can play a big part in choosing a theme.
- Is there a specific theme for the new baby’s nursery? If there is a special theme for the baby’s room, determine if this same theme would also be appropriate for the shower.
- What is unique about the mom to be? If there is something quite unique about her, you may want to incorporate this in to the theme.
- Are there family traditions to be followed? It may be important to incorporate family traditions, ethnic customs, religious beliefs, etc.
- What budget do you have to work with? Certainly having an idea of a budget for the shower could help determine one theme over another which might be more costly.
- Will the baby shower guests be only females? Or will it be a co-ed gathering? The answer to these questions may help determine if the shower should/could be extremely girlish or less so if there will be males in attendance.
- Is the arrival of the new baby from adoption? If so, any theme is still appropriate except for a pregnancy theme.

Baby Shower Themes Set The Tone Of The Party
Once you have answered the questions above, you should have a much better idea of what themes may or may not work for the baby shower. Keep in mind that it is okay to go with a traditional theme such as "It's A Boy" or "It's A Girl" or pink/blue etc. However, being creative in choosing a theme that truly matches the mom-to-be will be extremely meaningful. Let your imagination flow.

Looks so wonderful! We don't do this sort of thing here in Italy, so it's totally new to me; it's a cultural thing and it is so much fun!
Thanks.
Great hub, Sharyn! I love the collages you provided for inspiration, and I also love that you mention how popular co-ed parties are becoming. I've been to three now, and it's actually fun having the guys around to enjoy the party.
My baby shower was all about turtles for my little boy. :) My sister-in-law, who's a party planner part time, created a fabulous rubber ducky themed baby shower for a friend. The centerpieces were glass bowls filled with blue marbles and a rubber ducky sitting on them. So cute!
Voted up and sharing!
To plan and have a baby shower sounds so fun! There is no such thing as a baby shower here in Sweden, in fact, I have never heard of it before. But I can't understand why, since we import so many ideas and habits from USA, so why not this fun idea! I will spread this to all the young people I know and maybe I will eventually be invited to a baby shower:)) Thanks for this fabulous hub, it is so well designed and looks awesome,
Tina
I want to plan a baby shower now :)
Having a themed baby shower is a great idea. I really like all the questions you have listed for things to take into consideration when planning the shower. The collages you've made are great.
Pinning your hub so that when I need to plan a shower I'll be able to refer back.
Up, awesome and sharing. Great job!
No I'm NOT! Sharyn I'm 44! Lol omg! I'm old enough for grandkids - don't want none of those either! My oldest daughter is still kind of a baby at 23:) haha!
Oh girl there are some ugly little babies! Ugh! Gotta feel sorry for them:) lol. The mom doesn't even know though - it's like some kind of mad blindness! Hahaha I'm totally yanking your chain.
Good morning to ya!
Sharyn, You've certainly come up with more ideas than I would have ever thought of for a baby shower! I love the zoo animals as well as the ideas you mentioned in the sidebar, particularly Noah's Ark, Story Book and Nursery Rhyme! There's something for everyone here! If only someone I knew were having a baby- I'd have so much fun with these ideas!
Sharyn, you've definitely put a lot of thought into asking the right questions and organizing those ideas in the planning process.Great job in presenting so many theme ideas to get people thinking.Planning a baby shower can really be a lot of fun!
Hi Sharyn's Slant, I never had a baby myself, but my younger brother is having one, and a baby shower. I just hope he's ready for the responsibility, and I just wish him the best the funny thing is he hasn't yet invited me to it, so I would say that goes along the lines of being unprepared for it all, right.
Oh well that's life I guess, some things just aren't going to always work out as planned for some folks. If god permits them to turn for the better, it shall be a good thing if not wish for the best.
I liked how you used some pretty imagery here, and showed great detail into what one should know prior to throwing a baby shower, the in's and outs to it all. Nice Job overall. Voted up!
Hey Sharyn! Great Job! It is also terrific if you know if the baby is cute or ugly. That way you can like, practice smiling real sweet when you see that little monster.
hhahahahaha Totally kidding:) I just had to have some fun - no more babies for me! lol
Sharyn, this hub is amazing! I love the way you provided the clip art pictures and organized them into a fantastic format. I'm sure it didn't take you long to create this but it certainly looks like you put a lot of time and effort. Voted up! Take care, Kelley
Awwwwwwww, Sharyn.....Cootchie cootchie Cooooo.... I get all giggly and silly when I think of babies and baby showers..You must have known that I'm expecting my 10th grandchild in August and the shower is in June.....It's a BOY!
However.....as ALWAYS, being the perpetual Mother-of-the-Groom-Daddy...I tread gently and carry a big wallet. In this particular case, Maternal Grandma and I are close friends. In fact...you'll like this story....she and I lived in the same neighborhood when we were raising our children....she has girls, a few years younger than my boys.
She would always tell me what enormous crushes her grls had on my boys (who paid NO attention to these "little girls")......My girlfriend and I always joked about one day, one of her girls marrying one of my boys (Furthest thing from realistic....we were KIDDING)
Well....guess what?? In August, she and I will be sharing a granchild!
Funny how things happen, movin west, huh?
