How to Dress Right for Winter

From the moment temperatures start dropping, you must change the way you dress. Dressing warm protects your skin from chapping or drying out and reduces the chances of getting sick. While you might know the basics, such as wearing layers, you might not know that you should wear lightweight layers. This winter, dress you and your family in the proper attire.

Winter Hats

Every time you walk outside during the winter, you risk losing body heat. Wearing a hat helps retain heat. When you skip the hat, you can lose 80 percent of your body heat. Even if you know that little fact, you might not realize that the wrong hat can do just as much damage. Wearing a baseball hat, for example, releases heat through the back and sides. The right hat is one that fits closely on your head and completely covers your ears. If your hat does not cover your ears, pair the hat with a pair of earmuffs.

Wear Layers

Lightweight layers are far better than heavy or bulky layers. Opt for clothing that fits as tight as possible, but comes off quickly. If you find yourself heating up, you want the ability to remove at least one layer. Wear a tee-shirt or tank top that hugs your body and fits tightly over your skin. Cover that shirt with a loose-fitting turtleneck or sweater. Top that shirt with a second sweater and finish with a jacket.

For the bottom half, skip the short skirts and opt for a longer knee-length skirt, ankle-length skirt, or pants. Cover your lower half with a pair of tights or long underwear, or even both. A pair of pants added over the top retains your body heat. Finish off with a pair of thick or heavy socks.

The Right Winter Clothing

Before grabbing anything and everything, decide which clothes and fabrics are right for winter. Look for jackets with a natural or synthetic filling. The jackets feel lightweight against your body, but trap heat inside, which makes you feel warmer. Natural fibers or blends that contain natural fibers are far better than synthetic fibers. Opt for wool, cotton, or silk. Natural fabrics not only retain heat better than synthetic fabrics, but also dry faster. It is a fact you will appreciate when you find yourself covered in snow and ice.

      Good advice, for all sorts of cold weather experiences. Another tip: Don't wear two pairs of socks, wear one thicker pair. I'm not sure why, but as a Ski Guide we are always told to advise our clients of that!
