How to Make a Mother's Day Card

Updated on April 21, 2013

Mother's day gives us the opportunity to say thank you to the one who gave us life, love, and much more.

I have had a difficult relationship with my mother, but I still love her very much. She is my mother. I wish we have a closer friendship, but we are both too different to see eye-to-eye on most issues.

When I was growing up, my mother would take me to the bookstore every Saturday and I would get to pick out a book of my choice. She would also get me chocolate chip cookies so that I had something yummy to snack on while reading.

Even today, I think of my mother when I see chocolate chip cookies!

Who ran to help me when I fell,
And would some pretty story tell,
Or kiss the place to make it well?
My mother.

1. Mother's Day Card Ideas

The first step in making a Mother's Day card is to define a general theme, and objects that fit into that theme. One popular and effective Mother's Day card theme is flowers. Flowers are beautiful and are rich in symbolism. In fact, they have always been a favorite subject of artists, including Van Gogh and Monet. Since Mother's Day occurs in Spring, the use of a flower theme is especially appropriate.

For the Mother's Day cards in the article, I have chosen to feature pansies (above) and roses (below). Roses symbolize love and are a great way to tell our mom that we love her.

Pansies symbolize thought and emotion. In fact,

... the name pansy is derived from the French, pensée (thought), and was bestowed upon the plant for its resemblance to a pensive human face.

~~[Wikipedia]

As such, pansies tell our mothers that they are always in our thoughts. Personally, I have always loved pansies because they are so colorful and striking. These flowers really make our cards stand out. Alternatively, we can pick our mom's favorite flower or birth flower.

To the right, I have also included some rendered pictures of pansies and roses for your own Mother's Day card making needs. These images are rendered on a transparent background so you can combine them however you want. Flowers are also great to use for birthday card pictures.

Other Mother's Day card ideas include hearts, teddy bears, adorable mother animals with their young, and photo cards. I especially like photo cards because we can include a favorite picture of our mother.

2. Mother's Day Card Backgrounds

Once we have determined the main theme of our card, we can include an appropriate card background. There are several ways to create a background -

  • Use Photoshop brushes or tiles. We can pattern our card background using a Photoshop brush, or fill the background with seamless tiles. For example, the cloth background to the right was created with this folded cloth Photoshop brush pack.
  • Use Filter Forge. Filter Forge is a Photoshop plugin that allows us to create a variety of interesting effects, textures, and backgrounds. The second example background to the right was created using Filter Forge. Currently, there are over 8000 free filters on the Filter Forge site. There are always great discounts for the software ranging from 40%-60%, so wait until there is a good sale before purchasing.
  • Create a background from scratch. Here is a tutorial on how to make an interesting card background. I created the third thumbnail to the right using this procedure.
  • Buy a card background. The Renderosity marketplace has some very talented artists who sell compelling fantasy backgrounds, textured background paper, lettering, and much more. One of my favorites is Moonbeam.

Feel free to use the example backgrounds to the right for your Mother's Day personal card making needs.

3. Mother's Day Card Sayings

One of my favorite Mother poems is from Edgar Allan Poe.

Because I feel that in the heavens above
The angels, whispering one to another,
Can find among their burning tears of love,
None so devotional as that of "Mother,"
Therefore, by that dear name I have long called you,
You who are more than mother unto me.
~~ [Edgar Allan Poe]

In fact, there are many wonderful quotes and sayings on mothers, Gods, and angels. We can even carry the angelic theme through our whole card, by featuring an angel picture on the cover.

What are Raphael's Madonnas but the shadow of a mother's love, fixed in permanent outline forever?
~~[Thomas Wentworth Higginson]

All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother.
~~ [Abraham Lincoln]

God could not be everywhere, so he created mothers. ~~ [Jewish Proverb]

The sweetest sounds to mortals given
Are heard in Mother, Home, and Heaven.
~~ [William Goldsmith Brown]

And hushed me in her arms to rest,
And on my cheek sweet kisses prest?
My Mother.
