How to Score the Top Toys This Holiday Season Guaranteed!

Updated on September 19, 2016

Picture this...

It was December 1st last year. A first time mom is searching frantically for the latest, greatest new toy on the market. Only this toy was sold out everywhere. She was now picturing her 2 1/2 year’s face on Christmas morning crumbling when Santa failed in bringing her an ‘IPad’.

This was my story and the little girl was my older daughter. I had an IPad 2, which she loved to play kids apps. But she also kept asking to get her own. Then, I saw an advertisement for a toy called a “LeapPad". For all intents and purposes, this was a children’s version of an IPad made by the company LeapFrog.

Was I successful in finding the LeapPad?

Well if you continue to read this whole article, I you will find out. I also guarantee that you will be able to find and purchase the 'Hot Toy' you are looking for this holiday season.

So Began My Quest...

But back to my earlier hot toy quest. I searched for about a week with little to no success. I called every Toys R Us, Target and Walmart in a 50 mile radius. I got the response, "Sorry we don’t have any in stock, try back though".

I sat weighing my choices at this point. Then, I started to search online. I, also hit the same brick wall that it was out of stock. But online, vendors were selling them for double the retail price on EBay, Amazon and even Craigslist. I refused to pay over $200 or more for a toy that retailed for $99, because even the $99 was pushing it in my humble estimation.

Zoolert (A Godsend):

So, then I googled searched, "Hot Holiday Toys". A website came up called Zoolert. I had never heard of this website before. However, decided that I had nothing to lose and clicked on it. Well Zoolert, turned out to be a free toy tracking site.

How does Zoolert Work?

They send phone and e-mail alerts when the hard to find toy is in stock online. If you keep your computer on, you could also be alerted by sound clip that the toy in question was in stock in real time too. So, I thought what not try it. I had nothing to lose.

Did Zoolert Work for Me?

Well to my surprise, I scored a Green LeapPad on the second day that I was signed up. But I have a little girl and she is obsessed with pink and purple. By the way, the LeapPad came in two colors green and pink.

So even though I bought the green, I secretly kept the search alive for the pink. I thought if I could get the pink, I would just sell the green on EBay for what it cost me $99. See I wasn’t trying to make a profit like some people.

All Is Well That Ends Well...

Well about four days later, I did manage to buy the pink one when I got another alert from Zoolert that the pink LeapPad was available through Amazon for the retail price of $99. I paid and patiently tracked my shipment. When I finally had the Pink LeapPad in my possession and made sure it worked properly, then I listed the Green LeapPad on EBay for $99. It was sold in a mere 2 hours.

A Wonderful Christmas Was Had by One and All!!

Christmas morning came and went. But the look on my little girl’s face said it all. She still plays with her LeapPad. We also purchased a newer version for her younger sister. So now, both girls have their own ‘IPad’!!

Audra, we must be about the same age, because I also was a kid during the Cabbage Patch Craze. My dad actually had a friend, who was a manager at a local Woolworth put one aside for me that Christmas. Thanks seriously for reading, commenting and sharing, too!!

Seriously, thank you so much for coming back for sharing for me too. I have been so busy with the holiday and Lily's birthday that I haven't really had a second. I also had a touch of a virus or something, so it has been crazy here, but thank you so much again.

Oh then you would have loved last Christmas and having had that extra LeapPad, Linda, because I could have pretty much set my price on EBay or Craiglist, too. It was truly insane. I love the way you think though with gift certificates and grandparents do totally rock!! Thank you as always!!

I better be signing up for this Zoolert very soon as I will be 8 months pregnant around Christmas shopping time. I am usually one of the crazy moms who run from place to place a million times trying to find that one silly toy but I will be betting money that I won't feel like it this year. Thanks for sharing this site as it will help me tremondously hunt down all the Ninjago toys my boys are wanting this year! Voted up and oh so useful :)

Sasha, my pleasure to share this with you and my Lily will be two on Black Friday this year. So I know about shopping for a birthday that happens to be so close to Christmas too and can relate. Last year, when Lily turned one, we bought her the Dancing Mickey Mouse, because she loved Mickey (still does) and she ended getting a ton of clothes too (from the Black Friday sale at Children's Place!). I know what you mean though about it being hard to shop for a one year old, because other than Mickey I too was not sure what to buy her last year. Thank you also for the votes and share too :)

Rema, I say only September, because the procrastinator in me cringes at already doing holiday shopping, but the mother in me is right on top of it, lol!! Seriously, I have to admit I was not the first to start my Christmas shopping before meeting my husband and was the clown shopping on Christmas Eve (because it truly put me in the mood for Christmas that much more), but once I met Kevin and especially once we had kids this all changed. I do admit, he is right, but for some reason I still do miss my Christmas Eve shopping exploits lol :) Thank you though for your continued kindness and for your lovely comment!!

      Hi Janine,

Great read. Very smart idea getting the color that Emma wanted and disposing of the first one. You say 'only September'-It's 'already end of September'. Time is racing past. Within no time we'll be in December. Planning now for Christmas shopping is a wise decision Janine so that you can enjoy Christmas more. Hats off for your meticulous shopping plans! Cheers, Rema.

Mary, so true about us being more disappointed at times. Last year, my husband swore it was me who would be more upset if I didn't in the end get Emma that LeapPad and I think he may have been right in the end, because I so wanted to make her day perfect and made myself crazy tracking it down for her. Thank you for your votes too :)

Mary, I also can't believe that Furby made a comeback and is so big either, but apparently it is. As for having young ones, I can't believe I have already have a 3 year old, who now talks about Santa and her Christmas list too constantly. I really miss not having little ones to buy for Christmas anymore, but I do have the 1yr old Great granddaughter who will make up for that this year! I can't believe Furby is so popular. My kids always loved him. In fact, she still has one.

I do very much agree about Zoolert keeping your hands busy with the refresh button, but it really does work and can tell you first hand. those who are desperate for that hard to find toy in December have been successful thanks to this site (myself included). As for my husband, he really has gotten me to plan early as I was more a procrastinator in the past, but he tends to be right on this and would love to hear me say that, lol!!

Carol, so very glad to do all this research and pass it on. As I said I originally did this for my kids last year and now started early this year to get a jump start. It is a shame that so many take advantage of us who have kids and grandkids during the holiday season to charge ridiculous amounts of money for the latest toy or fad for young kids. I am sure not wanting to pay those inflated prices and am happy to help others too. Glad you bookmarked to use this and it is truly my pleasure to help. Thank you also for the votes and share too :)
