Kids’ Butterfly Party Food Ideas

Updated on August 4, 2012
Source

Butterflies are a popular party theme, especially among little girls. Finding fun butterfly activities and crafts to entertain the kids is a breeze, but what about the food? When I googled “Butterfly party food ideas,” I got lots of ideas for sweets (butterfly cookies, butterfly cake, butterfly cupcake cakes, and caterpillar cakes), but not much came up for some healthy, savory butterfly food.

Here are some sweet and savory food ideas for a kids' butterfly party.

Below are also some butterfly party activity ideas.

Finger Food: Celery Pretzel Butterflies

These celery, pretzel butterflies are the perfect finger food. The real secret here is to make the celery sticks flat by slicing off the rounded bottoms. Otherwise, the butterflies will fall over on their sides.

Ingredients

  • Celery
  • Cream cheese
  • Craisins or raisins
  • Pretzel twists

Directions

  • Cut the celery into 2-inch pieces
  • Slice a thin strip off rounded/bottom part of the celery to make a flat surface
  • Fill the celery with cream cheese. You can simply use a knife, or for a cleaner look, pipe the cream cheese on using a decorating bag and decorating tip #2A.
  • Cut the craisins or raisins in half. Place them on the cream cheese as eyes.
  • Place two pretzel twists onto the cream cheese as wings.

Main Meal: Butterfly Sandwiches

With these butterfly sandwiches, the sky's the limit! Simply make your favorite sandwich. Then cut the butterfly shape using a butterfly cookie cutter. Cut cucumber, carrot, or celery into small antennae and add them to the sandwiches.

  • Hummus and cucumber slices
  • Turkey, Ham, or Bologna
  • Cream cheese and jelly

If you have the time, also consider piping on cream cheese dots onto the outside and then placing raisins or craisins on them to decorate the butterfly sandwiches.

Dessert: Butterfly Cake

Of course, a butterfly party would not be complete without a beautiful cake. There are endless possibilities for butterfly cakes, cupcakes, and cookies.

Butterfly Party Activity Ideas

Butterfly parties lend themselves well to a host of fun activities, depending on the age of your child. Here are some fun activities to try:

  • Face-painting. Even the most simply drawing of a butterfly will thrill party-goers. Enlist an older sibling to paint designs on toddler and preschooler faces, hands, and arms.
  • Butterfly arts and crafts. Purchase some butterfly stickers, foam butterflies, markers, and dot paints for fun arts and crafts.
  • Coffee filter butterflies. Buy some large coffee filters and pipe cleaners. Decorate the coffee filters with stickers and markers. Wrap the pipe cleaners around the coffee filters to make a butterfly shape. Leave enough room to make antennae from the pipe cleaners.
  • Pin the antennae on the butterfly. What party is complete without a "pin the" game. Drawing a butterfly on poster board and then cutting out antennae is the easiest way to play this fun game.
  • Butterfly pinata.
