Makar Sankranti celebrations in India

Makar Sankranti is one of the famous festivals in India. People celebrate makara sankranti very happily in India and are celebrated in almost all places in India. Makar Sankranti is called in different names in different places. This festival is also called as Sankranti, maghi, Pongal etc. Makar Sankranti is celebrated in different ways in different places. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Haryana, Tamil Nadu are some of the places where Makara Sankranti is popularly celebrated. In some places like Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, Makara Sankranti is celebrated for many days. In Tamil Nadu people prepare a dish named pongal in a pot during this day.

Makar Sankranti Celebrations




Makara Sankranti is celebrated in the month of January. This festival is also considered as a harvest festival. There are various traditions and rituals for the people of India on Makara Sankranti. On this day people wake up in the early morning and get a bath and then they worship and pray to the sun god. Various special programmes will be conducted on this day in various places. Dramas, religious dances etc. are some of the programmes which will be held during these days. Every people put new clothes and starts celebrating.

Another interesting element during this festival is the flying of kites. People make variety of colorful kites and fly in the air which is a tradition. During these festival days there will be variety of colorful kites available in the shops. This festival is also called as Kite flying festival. Children will be excited to fly their kites on this day. The sky can be found very beautiful on this day with the large number of kites. People prepare variety of delicious sweet dishes on this festival day. Ladoo is one of the popular sweet dishes prepared on this day. People also give the ladoos and other dishes they prepared to their friends and relatives. Variety of delicious dishes will be available in the shops during these festival days. People will take their children to see parks, various programmes etc. during this day. Usually every people celebrate Makara sankranti spending with their family.
