The Wicked Witch of the West is not just any old witch costume, it is THE WITCH costume! I can't tell you how many times I've watched The Wizard of Oz and every time I was afraid of this wicked woman. She was evil and that's why she is a great Halloween costume. Did you know the Wicked Witch of the West is on the all time villain list? Yes, the AFI's (American Film Institute) Top 100 Villains list and there are only 9 women on the entire list...so that makes her very scary. She is listed at number 4 and believe me, she is in great...I mean really frightening, company.

The top ten villains on the AFI list are:

  1. Hannibal Lecter from "Silence of the Lambs"
  2. Norman Bates from "Psycho"
  3. Darth Vader from "Star Wars"
  4. The Wicked Witch of the West from "The Wizard of Oz"
  5. Nurse Ratched from "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest"
  6. Mr. Potter (Not Harry's father) from "It's A Wonderful Life"
  7. Alex Forrest from "Fatal Attraction"
  8. Phyllis Dietrichson from "Double Indemnity"
  9. Regan MacNeil from "The Exorcist"
  10. The Queen from "Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs"

This is a very scary list, come on, even Alex DeLarge from "A Clockwork Orange" is not in the top ten and he is a terribly scary guy. He is, however, a great Halloween costume!

Meet Margaret Hamilton The Woman Behind The Wicked Witch Of The West

She is one of the most iconic symbols of evil I can think of. Her green makeup, her pointy witch nose, her claw tipped fingers...can't you hear her screaming "I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too"! This woman must have been evil incarnate but no. She wasn't.

Margaret Hamilton actually was a kindergarten teacher before she became an actress. She started acting in 1932 and she was described as a sweet woman with a heart of gold.

The part of the wicked witch almost went to a more famous actress but they could not make her look ugly enough. Margaret got the role instead. It was a role she was born to play. I cannot imagine anyone else in her place.

The Wicked Witch Of The West's Broom Stick

What else do you need for your homemade Wicked Witch costume? A broom, a witch hat, and a stuffed flying monkey? Okay, the monkey might be pushing it a bit.

For the broom, check your garage or basement for an old one that's been out of commission. Or make one. If you can find some hay or straw around you can add it with glue or by tying it onto your regular house broom to make it look more like the broom in the picture. Don't say "Where will I get straw". It's Halloween time, I am sure you can find some straw at a neighbors house or a produce stand. Just ask the neighbor if you have have some or buy a little from the produce place.

Or you can make a broom with a branch, some small branches with leaves on them, and your hot glue gun.

Materials You Need To Make The Wicked Witch's Broom Stick

You will need a few items to make your own broom.

  • A Broom Stick Or Branch
  • Wood Straw or An Old Broom
  • Twine
  • Wire
  • Glue

That's the basic materials. Now check out the videos so you can figure out which broom you want to make ... and you may also ask yourself if you want to make your own. I am not a saw kind of girl, so I would just use a straight branch or a regular broom stick. (In fact, I would just add straw onto that regular broom I found in the basement! But that's me, you are going to do what makes you happy and satisfied with your costume broom accessory.

How To Make A Besom (Witches broom)

"And now, my beauties, something with poison in it, I think. With poison in it, but attractive to the eye, and soothing to the smell. Poppies... Poppies. Poppies will put them to sleep. Sleeeeep. Now they'll sleeeeep!"
