May is the fifth month of the year and is named after the Greek goddess Maia who looked after plants. It has 31 days like six other months, including January, March, July, August, October, and December.

May is known for several things. It is said that this is the month when plants really start to grow. This is probably why people say, "April showers bring May flowers."

Events Recognized in May

The month of May seems to be important for all members of the family with days to celebrate. It is the end of the school year with the Junior and Senior Proms happening during the month.

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated when the entire family can take part in the festivities. it is always celebrated on May 5 because that's what the name means in Spanish.

Sometimes teachers are not appreciated and rewarded for the hard work they do. They will be honored on May 7 for their contribution in the field of education on National Teacher Day.

Mother's Day is always the second Sunday in May. This year, it is celebrated on Sunday, May 10, 2020. That's the day when mothers all the world are honored. Restaurants will be full that day when families give their mothers a day off from cooking.

National Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. It is a federal holiday observed annually to pay tribute to men and women who currently serve in the United States' armed forces. In 2020, it falls on May 16.

Then on Monday, May 25, Memorial Day is celebrated as a federal holiday. Memorial Day or Decoration Day is the only federal holiday in May. It is the day to remember the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. Memorial Day is observed every year on the last Monday in May.

Nice facts on May. Didn't know May represented the emerald and the Lily flower of the valley, very interesting to learn these things. I scored 83% percent on the quiz too.

Louise, I read that Mother's Day is celebrated there in March. I see that Father's Day is in June as it is here in the US. May is one of my favorite months because of the pleasant weather.

May is a nice month of the year. Though here in England we celebrate Mother's Day in March. Father's Day is in June. I find May quite pleasant weather wise though, it's not too hot and winter is out of the way.
