Don't Drive Yourself Crazy During The Holidays

Updated on March 11, 2013

Someone's got a lampshade on their head, the fruitcake is upside down, and the dog is eating the homemade spinach dip from the serving plate. Fun right? After all you've done up until now.

All you can do is just decide that no matter what, you're not going to involve yourself in all of the activities that people think that you should. See, that's it. We're talking about what other people think you "should" do. Right away you can see that something's wrong with this picture. You know though, it seems that every year we tell ourselves that we're not going to over-do it, but we do. Then well feel, well, terrible to say the least.

So there's got to be something that we can do about this. Maybe we could do everything a little less intensely. That is, we just won't put those extra lights out on the giant pine trees. We won't put big red bows outside on the landscaping. We won't run around to get batteries for the singing tree ornament, the singing wreath, and the talking xmas tree. And we certainly won't bake and decorate gingerbread cookies for someone's party.

Just think how great you'd feel if you let some of those "so-called" obligations go. You know you'd feel great. Why wouldn't you? This is something that you can do to stave off cynical feelings during this time of year. But, I can practically hear you saying," How in the world am I going to do something like this. Who will do all of the things that I decide to leave out of my holiday plans?" Well okay. It probably is true that you don't have someone sitting around just waiting to cover you, while you're taking a vacation, from what can be great turmoil for a lot of people.

You know what? Those things that you leave off your list are just not going to be done. Yes. That's right. They're not going to be done. Now, you have to get over it so you can make a list of things that you decide that you really do want to do. You know you have to make and check things off some kind of list or you won't get anything done. And, you do want to do the fun things going on during the winter holidays. So, right now give yourself permission to have a short list this year.
