My New Year Resolution for 2017

Updated on March 18, 2017

Jack Lee, a retired engineer, worked at IBM for 28 years. He has traveled all over the world and has been an active investor for 10 years.

This year, my one resolution is to focus on giving back. I have been blessed and have always tried to give back by doing some volunteer work. This year, my focus will be helping a group that really can make a difference in someone's lives. Not just this year but for years to come. My group of focus is the CCNY Women's Fencing team.

- Jan. 2017

I am an alumni of CCNY and also a past member of the Men's Varsity Fencing team. I am currently retired and living the American dream. I had a long successful career in Corp. America. My success is a result of my education at CCNY, both in the school of Engineering, my chosen profession and in the school of life by being on the fencing team. It was more just a varsity sports. For many of us, it gave us confidence and discipline and the skills necessary to succeed.

I have encountered difficulties throughout my 40+ years and the lessons learned at CCNY helped me overcome difficulties and thrive. I want to help give a new generation of CCNY students the same opportunity we had.

My focus this year will be to restore the CCNY fencing team to the glory days of time past. I plan to do this by creating a targeted Fund to help financially and also to assist in the implementation of these goals.

The First Step

A wise Chinese philosopher by the name of Confucius said, "the longest journey begins with the first step..." I have taken that first step by creating a hub that outline a proposal to help the Women's fencing team on a long term basis. It will take the assisstance of many people including some of our former teammates to make this a reality. My second step is to reach out to my teammates. Wish me luck.

As part of this effort, I reached out to some of my teammates and recently, we had a reunion dinner in Chinatown to celebrate the lunar New Year. Some members have not been together in 40 years. It was a great event!!!

My Fencing Team Reunion in 2017 after 40 Years

I also like to take this opportunity to talk about some regrets I had this year. I had a few friends and colleagues that past away in recent years without my knowledge. I only found out about it after the fact. My regret is that I let my relations slide over the years and did not make an effort to stay in touch. A new resolution is to make an active effort to reach out to my old friends and re-connect. In the past, while I was working, I had an excuse but no more now that I am retired and have more time on my hands.

I will reach out to my old friends and colleagues. With the internet and social media, it is so easy to track down people. I was able to locate at minimum an address so I was able to write a letter.

My advice to others is to try and do the same. Don't regret it when it is too late. You will be rewarded with old memories and old friends...

In 2017, one of my activities is to organize a reunion dinner for my IBM colleagues. So far, I have located about 50 members. We will be getting together in Aug. with their spouses. It would be a reunion after at least 15 years. Many have retired and some are teaching. Some have found new interests. It was wonderful to learn about them and catch up.

I was told that the key to making a good New Year resolution is to be realistic and seek modest goals. I am taking that advice.

Sorry for the confusion. I was a member of the CCNY Men's fencing team back in the 1970s. However, since then, partly due to Title 8 mandates, the men's team was disbanded. Currently, only the women's team is active but in dire financial needs. My effort now is to help restore the women's team first and perhaps down the road revive the men's team as well.
