What's Your New Year's Resolution?

Updated on December 30, 2011
carolinemd21 profile image

I am an artist, designer, photographer and writer. See more of my work on cmariearts.

My New Year's Resolution is to change my way of thinking.

I can get really caught up in a negative way of thinking letting my fears take over which makes it hard for me to move forward in any situation. I have recently let go of thinking this way. I've been trying to see the bright side of things and find the beauty in everything I do and see. It has made me more happy.

For some reason I'm the type of person who always wants more. I get bored with the ordinary and need to be inspired and challenged in order to feel alive and passionate. I am very passionate by nature, but it dims with fear, depression, and regrets. I always think well, things could be better. So, I am going to try thinking in the new of things being already good and see where that takes me.

My life last year was very different than this year. It changed in an instant and I couldn't control it. It's funny how life does that to you sometimes. Last year, I was working at a magazine as their designer and art director. I also wrote articles for them from time to time. The company closed down at the end of summer and I was left dealing with being laid off going back to freelance work. It hasn't been the easiest transition. I became sort of depressed and kind of lost as to where I am going to go to from there. I decided to start my own business and magazine which I am working on now while freelancing and volunteering.

In a way I think life throws you these curve balls to keep you on your toes. I wasn't happy at that job even though it was somewhat fulfilling creatively. My boss was inappropriate and to some degree I felt creatively stunted. As I look back on it, it was a pretty toxic environment even though it seemed glamourous for awhile. So, I am glad for this opportunity of changing my life even though it is a challenge. I think what you focus on becomes your priority and your passion drives it.

I am also trying to be more healthy in my lifestyle, eating, etc. I started doing acupuncture last May through the summer for stress and to see how it made me feel. At the end of every session I always felt refreshed and more clear with my life focus. I also started doing yoga and was going to start taking more classes maybe becoming a yoga instructor. I always had a passion for it. I also love Ayurveda. My family was always into a more healthy lifestyle. My grandmother from a young age took me to health food stores and I always loved natural remedies.

Another thing I am changing is trying not to get down in the winter months, which has always been an obstacle for me. I don't like how dark it gets so soon. It always made me sort of depressed. Exercise really helps with that.

The number one thing is to love myself more. Pamper myself in anyway possible and to just be happy. Life is short.

I know I've been told if you focus on one thing it usually doesn't work out and backfires on you, but if you change your way of living and lifestyle, I think that's a totally different thing. What are some of your resolutions for the New Year?

Wishing you a Happy New Year and all the best in the upcoming year!

Beautiful hub, Caroline, the things you said about yourself made me feel good too. About four years ago I was "let go" from my job. For awhile I was devastated, then a rural neighbor offered me a little employment. From there I bought a laptop and finally the internet, and have taken my writing from the last 35 years, updated it, self-published, and people are actually reading and liking my work. But I needed that slap in the face first. As for the New Year, I haven't actually made any resolutions, but I also haven't looked back. Thank you, Caroline, for this wonderful hub.

My resolution is to continue with a healthy lifestyle. I have always been into fitness. I 'kinda let it slip for awhile when i started writing so much, but i'm back..The winter months can be depressing. Staying close to family and friends tends to help with that. Good luck with your new freelancing endeavor. The acupuncture is interesting. I didn't know it was used for depression. That would be an interesting hub..Thank you for sharing..Cheers

NONE!! Why would I need the New Year as an 'excuse' for change? So my resolution is not to have a resolution. Same than every year. ;-)

I am inspired by your hub. I need to do just that, but sometimes I feel like life has thrown a metal net over me and the wires are cutting into me. Maybe I should begin carrying an "metal cutter" with me? Hope your resolution keeps growing. :)

Truth , truth and more truth , it simply melts me on the inside it can't hurt , it's energy and energy is good. Where ever it's coming from is always a place , to be cherished and protected and also nourished. It's also quite simple, what truth wants in return .

The answer is also quite simple . It wants again just the same energy that it conjured up to use as strength, to put out something so precious and dear to us all .

Believe it or not that's the very ingredient our world is dying from a lack of. More sincere and meaningful truth.

I pray that the Most High God shows you that way all through the coming year and for all times beyond .

      Great truthful hub Caroline.

Stay truthful to yourself always . Be certain that whenever you place it outside of yourself , know what it commands in return.

Hoping Cara.R didn't just have a Freudian slip when she wrote that "My Finance is a Gem too!:))" Check out the Hubs on Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) and keep the gloom out of the room.

Take life by the reins and gallop on. Thank you for sharing. I think we need to hear more about how we pick up and move on. Life happens to everyone be it good or bad. The good helps us to feel successful and happy, but it's the bad things that really make us grow and become better. Without the bad everything would be boring and plateaued. Make a New Year's resolution, keep it or not, but make it.

Happy New Year and good luck in the coming year!

I can relate to your hub. Are you a Scorpio too? :)) This New Year I look forward to starting my life with my Fiance. Even if the world does end :)) I'll get a few months to spend with my husband. And not have to say goodbye at the airport yet again. I have a lot of things I need to do, there all on the list but he's at the top.

Best wishes to you for a Happy New Year.
