Forgot Valentines Day?
A short story by Jimmythejock
I forgot Valentines Day
Oh dear what a mess, what am I going to do? I was just leaving work and one of my co workers wished me a happy Valentines day, without thinking I smiled and returned the good wishes until I realised what I was saying and my heart sank.
I have been so busy the past couple of weeks at work that I completely forgot all about it, I was even writing today's date all day and still it didn't sink in. I had no clue until my co worker pointed it out and to say the least I panicked.
Valentne's day, it's late and most of the stores are closed and I don't even have a simple card for my wife never mind the dozen red roses that I always buy for her and as if this wasn't bad enough, this Valentines day was an extra special one because it was 20 years to the day that I had got down on one knee and asked for her hand in marriage.
Flowers For My Valentine
Valintines Day Surprise
I Know that they have a bad reputation but I found myself at an all night gas station, picking up a cheap bunch of yellow red white and orange flowers a cheap and nasty box of chocolates and what must have been the tackiest Valentines day card that I have ever seen in my entire life, a plain white card with a hole in the center and the words"My heart would be here but you already have it"
I got into the car got out my pen and wrote a short personal message on the card and then drove the rest of the way home. dreading handing these tacky and cheap gifts to the love of my life.
I got home and as I was about to turn the handle of the front door and go in, the door opened and I was greeted by a great big kiss and a hug from my darling wife. "Happy Valentines day my love" she said as she grabbed my hand and led me into the kitchen.
She sat me down at the table and served me a full plate of spaghetti bolognese, which we always had a giggle at because the first time she made spaghetti bolognese for the two of us she made enough of the stuff to feed an army and that happened to be 20 years ago to the day the same day that I proposed marriage to her.
To cut a long story short, during the conversation over dinner I discovered that she was wearing the same dress she had worn that night 20 years ago, although if she hadn't hinted about it so often I would never have known that, she also hinted that she was wearing the same perfume and identical underwear as she wore that night too.
I must admit that I will always remember her underwear from that night, lets just say that she wasn't wearing it for very long.
A Box of Chocolates
Valentine's Day Gifts
After dinner it was time to exchange gifts with each other, the moment had come and I was sweating it out dreading this moment, I prayed that she had gotten something cheap and tacky for me as I had for her.
My wife has a knack for choosing the perfect card no matter what the occasion and no matter who the recipient is and tonight was no exception, she had bought the most beautiful card for me and as always, the wording of the card was like a personal message from her as if the card was just made for her to give to me.
Then she handed me a small package, carefully wrapped in shiny white paper and tied with a small red bow, it looked so perfect that I really didn't want to open it and spoil her delicate handiwork.
How does she do it? She always knows what I want, I opened the box and there it was, shiny and gold it was the wedding ring that I had never had but had always wanted a plain gold band, engraved on the inner with the words I love you.
Twenty years ago we were younger and poorer, when we married we couldn't afford two rings and we made do with buying a ring for my wife and I borrowed a ring from my friend for the big day.
Luckiest Man On Earth
My Turn, I asked my wife to wait for a few seconds as I went out to the car and retrieved my gifts for her, cursing and swearing all of the way out to the car and back to the house and wishing that I had remembered a lot sooner what day it was.
I slowly approached her, hand behind my back hiding the flowers, my hand was visibly shaking as I handed her the card and the hastily wrapped box of chocolates, then I kissed her on the cheek "Happy Valentine's Day My darling" I said followed by "I love you"
She Picked up the card first and opened it, when she saw the card she turned to look at me with a puzzled expression on her face.
Then she opened the chocolates again with the funny look when she saw what was inside the package.
Finally I plucked up the courage and handed her the horrid flowers at which point I was feeling like the worst husband who ever lived.
She looked at the flowers and then she looked at me again with a quizzical expression on her face.
It was a strange moment and just as I was readying myself for world war 3 to break out, she lit up the room with her beautiful smile, threw her arms around me and said "You are such an old romantic and I love you so much"
Now it was my turn to look puzzled until she said to me" These are the exact same gifts that you bought for me 20 years ago, the card the flowers and the same chocolates even the message you wrote in the card is the same. I will always love you forever always and a day"
She rushed upstairs to the bedroom and a minute later came back down with the card I had bought for her on the nigh 20 years ago when I had proposed to her, a plain white card with a hole in the center and the words"My heart would be here but you already have it"
I never did pluck up the courage to tell my wife the truth about how I forgot all about Valentine's day or of how that my last minute panic buys were just a mere coincidence rather than the well thought out gifts that she thought they were.
