Palm Sunday, a Day to Remember

Updated on April 10, 2019

Palm Sunday a Day to Remember!

Palm Sunday is a marvelous day to remember! It is the day the Church at large celebrates that Jesus triumphantly rode into Jerusalem and entered in upon an “ass” which we know as a donkey! His followers paved the way before him laying down some of their garments along with branches hewn from a Palm tree along the way. How interesting that the King of Kings would continuously and graciously humble himself. Despite the ridicule persecution and mistreatment He vehemently experienced, yet He never lost sight of His predetermined goal to fulfill the will of our Heavenly Father. In Him we can discover the true meaning of life and love. For HE is LOVE!

Why did JESUS not just march in upon a grand horse? Perhaps because a horse is known for being an animal used in “war!” The king would often ride a horse when going off to war. Riding upon a donkey that had never been ridden upon was of spiritual importance! Certainly before Him was one of the greatest spiritual battles ever awaiting Him… According to Eastern tradition, the donkey is known as an animal of “Peace!” How very interesting, because Jesus is also known as “The Prince of Peace!” (By the way; only God can give us the Peace that surpasses the understanding of man.) The king would also ride a donkey during times of peace. The Palm branches are a sign of triumph and victory within the history of the Jewish and Christian culture. Little did they know all that would take place the following week. The eventual triumph before Him represents which would become a universal life-changing phenomenon.

Jesus knew the magnitude of the occasion that was before Him. One that would press upon His heart to the point that He would “sweat drops of blood.” Medically speaking this is what is called a “hematohidrosis.” Although it is extremely rare it takes place usually when one is under perfuse stress. Jesus is the first recorded in the Bible… It is said that the multiple blood vessels under the armpits that are in a net-like form contract then dilate to the point of rupture. This causes blood to sweat from the body… One can only begin to imagine the impact of this gargantuan responsibility that weighed upon the pure sinless human body that encased the “Divine!” He had the weight of the sins of the world weighing upon His flesh... Christ Jesus sweated blood from His body while He was fervently praying while amidst the “Garden of Gethsemane.” The night before Jesus was betrayed by His disciple Judas and arrested to later be unjustly crucified on the Cross. What passion emitted from His presence.

This glorious day was prophesied about some 450 – 500 years before by the Prophet Zechariah. "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey” Zechariah 9. Palm Sunday is also known as “Passion Sunday.” “Hosanna, Hosanna, the multitudes cried as Jesus rode into Jerusalem upon the donkey. Meaning: “Blessed is He who is to come and comes in the Name of the Lord God!”

Jesus Christ is the Way the Truth and the Life!

Palm Sunday is the 6th Sunday in Lent that is right before Easter! It is the Holy Sunday that denotes the commencement of “Holy Week.” Easter is really "Resurrection Sunday." It is also during this week Jesus is crucified, dies and was buried in a borrowed tomb! Easter is the glorious day the Christian Church celebrates our Lord's Resurrection from the grave. Lent takes place over a period of forty days prior to what we know as Easter. The palm branches they laid before Jesus on Palm Sunday now serve to represent the Joy & Victory within many nations as well as the Christian community that JESUS CHRIST has VICTORY over the grave!

Customarily many later took the blessed palm branches home, burned them and saved the ashes for “Ash Wednesday” the following year. Ash Wednesday also marks the beginning of the first day of Lent. On Ash Wednesday as an act of humility some take the residual ashes and place them upon their foreheads as an outward symbol of the Cross remembering that we “are but dust!” The term “Lent” is not actually in the Bible! In reading the Old Testament one can learn that it was customary for one to often, humbly adorn themselves in “sackcloth and ashes!” to outwardly demonstrate that they were regretful, remorseful and had repented of their sins! The Lent season is also known as the forty day time period of fasting and repentance prior to Easter! Many commit to giving up; “fasting” from something during this time as a sign of honoring the Lord and to demonstrate the ability of discipline over sin which yields exercising more moderate self control.

To truly become a follower and disciple of Jesus Christ means; we commit our lives to begin learning how to live our lives to please the Lord. It is a lifelong process. His infallible Word then becomes our “Life Manual.” There is a wealth of Spiritual Food to help us to grow spiritually daily as we embrace it within our hearts. The four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John contain a wealth of Spiritual Food to teach us about the significant importance in regards to the sinless life, birth, death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

As believers we know that the Lord was both God and human. Christ Jesus was never just a man. He was indeed divine. His earth body endured the ultimate maximized levels of pain and mistreatment that one could ever withstand! Yet He never sinned. Nor did He ever yield to temptation. No doubt He unequivocally suffered greatly. The same crowds that welcomed Him crying; “Hosanna, Hosanna” days before, later cried “crucify Him…” How soon they forget!

Many great life lessons are here in HIS WORD to teach us the importance of accepting the Lord into our lives…! God is Love! The Love of Jesus lasts through Eternity! There is nothing more precious! Because of His Love, Jesus Christ sacrificed His Life on the Cross and took upon Himself the sins of the world! Through Him we have VICTORY over sin. Sin is what separates us from the LORD! We can call upon HIM 24/7. He prepared the Way back to the Father for us!” PRAISE GOD !

Truly the Lord is; "AWEWONDERFUL!"

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. “TRUST in GOD and TRUST in ME! In my FATHER'S HOUSE are many rooms, if it were not so, I would have told you. I AM going to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I WILL come again and take you with Me that you may also be where I AM. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to Him, “LORD we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way? “JESUS answered, “I AM the WAY the TRUTH and the LIFE! NO one comes to the FATHER except through Me. If you really knew Me, you would KNOW the FATHER as well…” JOHN 14.

JESUS CHRIST has shown us the way to the FATHER! HE is the WAY to ETERNAL LIFE! He has already prepared the Way. It is up to each individual to dedicate themselves to accept Him as Lord & Savior. JESUS CHRIST is the doorway to SALVATION! There is no other way. This is one of the most IMPORTANT basic passages of Scripture to know about as a child of the LORD! ALL the promises of His Word are true. Ask the LORD to open your spiritual eyes. Meditate, ponder, digest, embrace and accept Him as LORD into your heart. When you accept Him as LORD and SAVIOR of your life, HIS HOLY SPIRIT is awakened within your soul! HE then becomes “the Comforter & the internal Counselor and Keeper of your soul! “The LORD will NEVER leave nor forsake you!” PALM SUNDAY IS A DAY TO REMEMBER!

~ TO GOD BE THE GLORY! ~

Never thought specifically about the difference of 'entering the city on a donkey' and going to 'enter the city upon a horse of war'. Fantastic to cheer about!

You explained it interestingly. Thank you!

Itakins, THANK YOU! I agree! I don’t think that our infinitesimal minds can ever really fully conceive or grasp the magnitude of the LORD sacrificing His sinless life for the sins of the world! The excruciating pain, suffering and rejection He experienced really is beyond words… It really serves to even further demonstrate the depth of His Amazing Love! I pray that you have a Wonderfully Blessed “Palm Sunday. In HIS Love, Grace, Joy, Peace & Blessings!

I think it's interesting about the young donkey He rode. As the world gets worse and worse, I keep looking up and asking "how long?" I keep in mind that when Jesus comes back He will not be riding on an animal of peace but He will be riding on a steed, an animal of war (in Revelation). The next time, it will not be on mission of peace but one of finishing a war with Satan and his world of evil.

My church has never celebrated with the giving of palms. It was always the senior pastor's opinion that all of the Jews greeting Jesus there as the son of David were all the same ones that cried "Crucify Him" only a few days later. I never agreed with him on this. I feel that crowds do what crowds do no matter what the century. I feel the move to accept Him was started by those who believe and really were ready to receive Him on His terms, and then the crowd joined in as a fun activity. Those people were really not persuaded but did this in case He would begin to free them from Rome. Then when they saw Him beaten and standing there, they knew that this was not the man they thought he was, and well, they may as well have a little entertainment and maybe take a few bets as well on how long he would last and if the birds would get his eyes or not. They bet on everything back then. It didn't help that the Jews began to coax them to yell "crucify Him!" I have never gotten a palm to take home in memory of the ones that started this or for the risen Christ who was, in fact, the Messiah I thought He was and more.

As far as the hemotodrosis goes, I learned a while back that this stress often comes when one is hung upside down. When it happens then the body is hyper-sensitive to pain or touch or pressure of any kind. It added to the weight of the Scriptures point that He "suffered more than any man." Thank you for a great hub dear sister and friend.
