Parades in Connecticut
Parades are a traditional way to recognize holidays and other special events in communities across the United States. Tourists and residents of Connecticut will find parades in all parts of the state, and Connecticut's four largest cities offer parades celebrating holidays such as Christmas, Memorial Day and even St. Patrick's Day.
Bridgeport is home to the Barnum Festival Great Street Parade, part of the community's annual Barnum Festival schedule of events. The parade takes place each summer in Bridgeport's downtown area, starting at the intersection of North Avenue and Clinton Avenue. The event has a circus theme and features clowns, floats, marching bands and drill teams. The city's Puerto Rican Parade of Fairfield County, a celebration of Puerto Rico's culture and heritage, occurs during the summer. The procession starts at Park Avenue and ends at Seaside Park.
New Haven hosts the parade with the highest attendance in Connecticut, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Established in the mid-19th century, the parade occurs each year on the Sunday before St. Patrick's Day, running from Chapel Street to Grove Street. One of the parade's special events is the election of the parade queen. Seymour, a suburb situated north of New Haven, offers the annual Seymour Christmas Parade. The community's Main Street serves as the route for this holiday event, and the parade features floats and local marching bands.
The city of Hartford in central Connecticut is home to the Connecticut Veterans Parade. This parade happens each year on the Sunday proceeding Veterans Day. The Connecticut Veterans Parade route is almost two miles long, running from Buckingham Street to Hudson Street. The parade committee elects a new American military veteran to lead the parade each year. East Hartford's Memorial Day Parade happens each year during the Memorial Day weekend. Held in remembrance of soldiers killed in battle, the route runs down Main Street, starting near the Town Green area and ending at the Hillside Cemetery.
The city of Stamford hosts the UBS Parade Spectacular. This yearly event is held in downtown Stamford every November. Boasting large helium balloons of cartoon characters, the parade route starts at Summer Street and ends at Atlantic Street. The Stamford Harbor Parade of Lights occurs annually over Thanksgiving weekend. The evening parade features boats floating across Stamford Harbor, each one decorated with lights. Local marinas, parks and restaurants serve as spectator areas for the Harbor Parade.
