Pet Costumes

Pet and Dog Halloween Costumes

Pet costumes are a growing part of having fun at Halloween, and dogs in particular are the favorite pet to deck out in a costume, as their changing facial expressions and funny behavior make it a blast to include them as part of the costume fun.

Other pets are sometimes part of Halloween, like the occasional cat, but we all know how hard it is to get those guys to settle down to even allow us to get them in a costume, let alone keep them in one.

Of course some dogs can be difficult too, but there are so many different dogs' shapes and sizes, that almost every dog species will have a Halloween costume that will go with their body type, and so I think that's the motivating factor behind their popularity for putting a costume on them.

One thing that works well with dogs is if there is a family theme to your Halloween celebration, and you dress them up like the costume theme the family is using. Great fun when you do that.

Dog Halloween Costumes

For the first look at dog and pet Halloween costumes, I thought I would include a photo with a number of dogs in order to generate some ideas with the variety of body types dogs have. As you can see, some costumes lend themselves better to different dogs, and so work better for them.

What's also funny is when you have a certain dog type that may have a general masculine look, but then dress up the female in a feminine costume, as with the piglet costume shown below.

There are so many costumes for dogs available that all you really have to do is look at the type of dog you have and its body shape and look for a costume that fits it best.

You could also go contrary with the costume, putting one on the dog that is totally opposite of its look just to make it stand out more in a funny way.

Variety of Dog Halloween Costumes

Taco Chihuahua Costume

This pet Halloween costume was perfect to me. Not only does it cater to the body type of the little dog, but the theme of a taco and a chihuahua goes together so well, that you can already see the same smiles from your family and friends that you had when you first looked at it.

Hilarious Pirate Dog Costume

This is a hilarious pirate dog costume, and is competition to my profile avatar on Barnacle Bill, if you've ever looked at it.

I really like how this dog and costume go together. And what's not to love about that hook on his paw to convince us of his authenticity. That face is perfect for a gruff looking pirate.

Cheerleader Dog Pet Costume

While I really like all the dog costumes here, this one just fits the dog great, and that look on his face can't get any better.

These types of costumes that included appendages like the cheerleader hands and pompoms really work well with dogs, and add that extra dimension that brings into being a great pet costume.

Robin Hood and Maid Marian Dog Costumes

If you have a couple of dogs you can put costumes on, going with a theme could work very well for you, as shown by the Robin Hood and Maid Marian costumes below. These two dogs look great.

Dog Dressed in "Elf" Costume

Here is a fantastic elf costume worn by the dog which could probably be used in several different situations.

First, it could obviously be a Christmas costume, but as any costume would work for Halloween, it would be something that could be used there as well. And because it's a spoof of the Will Ferrell movie, Elf, it includes the green colors, which could also be used for St. Patrick's Day. The only downside there is the inclusion of the elf shoes, which some Irish purists may consider tacky for St. Patrick's Day.

Either way, it's a great costume, one that will elicit great laughs for those seeing it.

Why Dogs Work so Great as Halloween Props

These photos of dogs in costumes speak for themselves as to why dogs work so good as Halloween props and additions to the festivities. There's just something they add that can't be reproduced by anything else.

Dogs as part of our Halloween costume fun is a great way to entertain and delight your family and guests on Halloween.

Great photos. I missed my chance. I had a 3 legged dog for 15 ½ years. All she would have needed was an eye patch, vest and peg leg. Oh well. Congrats on HubNuggets nomination.
