Instructions For Pumpkin Carving

  1. Select your template of choice and print it out.
  2. Cut the lid off the pumpkin.
  3. Remove the lid and scoop out the seeds. (Keep the seeds as these may come in handy later, depending on what design you are doing.)
  4. Tape the stencil to the area of the pumpkin that you want to carve.
  5. Use pins to poke holes along the pattern outline.
  6. Remove the stencil and you should be left with pinhole marks for your template.
  7. Use your tools to cut out the appropriate parts of the pumpkin and neaten up with your scraper. Voila!

Pumpkin Carving Tips

It is important to take on board some tips when carving your pumpkin because this will prevent you from making any errors or hurting yourself in the process.


  • Choose a large pumpkin to make carving easier

  • Make the pumpkin last longer by soaking it in a solution of 1 gallon of water and 1 teaspoon of bleach.
  • Select a basic pattern if you are a beginner.
  • Leave the lid off the pumpkin when lighting a candle inside to prevent fire hazards.
  • Refrigerate the jack-o'-lantern when you are not using it.
  • Use spices like cinnamon and sprinkle on the pumpkin to make the home smell fresh!
  • Keep the pumpkin seeds and toast them - they are a brilliant source of fibre!

      I suppose it is cheating a little! But hey, a helping hand is always good for the first time carvers! I've seen photos of those kinds of spewing pumpkins, they are great! Think I will try that this year, and maybe painting my boyfriend like a pumpkin too. :) Lol!

      These are cute! But isn't a stencil just kinda cheating! lol! Our household has 'spewing' pumpkins! Adds an extra gross factor to the halloween docorations! You save some of the pulp and seeds from inside and have them spewing out of the mouth hole and onto the floor, etc! Although I am rarely involved in carving (its the boys job in our flat!) I on the other hand paint my hubby into a pumpkin for work in his pub every year! He ends up orange for about a week!
