Ski holiday in Serre Chevalier

Updated on June 18, 2011

Serre Chevalier - a ski holiday at its height

Serre Chevalier is a ski resort that has something for everyone – it is one of the biggest resorts in France with 250km of interlinked pistes across 4 distinct villages. For winter 11/12, the area is looking to re-name itself as Serre Chevalier Vallee allowing the 4 villages – Briancon, Chantemerle, Villeneuve and Monetier – to further develop their own character.

The resort benefits from having over 300 days of sunshine every year which is a delight when enjoying the expanse of pistes that provide an excellent test for all ski levels. The beginners and intermediates can enjoy a wide range of greens, blues and reds - 83 slopes in all whilst there are also a good selection of blacks and powder-filled tree lined runs which will keep the more capable skiers happy.

Although the village heights range from 1200m to 1550m, over 80% of the ski area is above 2000m which results in an excellent snow record for the area.

For the family, there is plenty to keep the younger and the older children entertained. The resort has been accredited as Famille Plus and offers a range of kids ski areas and play parks as well as sledding runs to keep them smiling. Further, there is an excellent range of child care options with child care available for children from 6 months to 6 years.

For the older ones, there is the Altitude Snowpark which boasts a beginners, intermediates and advanced area as well as a sound system, chill out area and barbeque. There is also a boardercross zone at Chantmerle which is available for public and family use.

There are lots of activities to be enjoyed but a real highlight for those over 16 is to drive a piste-basher – what skier or boarder has not fancied the opportunity to jump in one of these lumbering beasts and see how the couduroy is made!

If you have some non-skiers amongst your family, they can enjoy a visit to the highest town in Europe – Briancon – which is now a UNESCO World heritage site or a visit to the thermal baths at Monetier.

Inevitably, as Serre Chevalier has such a great offering for the families, the club scene is more limited. Apres ski is focused around a wide range of bars and restaurants which does mean that you will be ready for an early start in the morning to fully appreciate the excellent ski area.
