The Best Halloween Costumes for Kids 2013

Updated on August 16, 2013

I don't know about you, but ever since I was a kid I always loved Halloween. The spookiness of the occasion, combined with my own vivid imagination left me certain that on this night of the year witches would be stirring their cauldrons, casting spells or flying through the skies on their broomsticks, black cat perched behind them, whilst Vampires would be out and about looking for some innocent person they could literally drink the blood of. Mummies would be shuffling along the streets looking for victims, whilst ghosts flitted around the local graveyard waiting to scare some unsuspecting teenager that used it as a shortcut home.

Of course much of the fun of Halloween is the dressing up in costumes, each year trying out new ideas to disguise ourselves and our kids so that we can go door to door 'Trick or Treating'. We need to find places to buy these more and more adventurous costumes, and I for one have been really impressed by the range of costumes offered this year by Amazon's Spooktacular Kids Halloween Costumes Shop. We just didn't have anything like that much choice when we were kids ourselves. In my day we made our own costumes out of sheets with holes cut in for eyes or wrapped ourselves in bandages to look like mummies. It seems like today children have a fantastic range of Halloween costumes to choose from.

Of course if you are going to dress up for Halloween, then it is important to choose what kind of costume you want to wear. For example do you want to choose spooky costumes, or do you prefer the more modern idea of dressing up as superheroes or Disney characters? Personally I am a traditionalist, and I always loved the truly scary costumes that truly represent what Halloween is all about. One of the sets of different costumes I liked for this reason was the Harry Potter Halloween Costume Collection because it naturally focuses on Wizards, Witches etc, very appropriate for the Halloween topic, and far more so than costumes such as Barbie Dolls and things if you ask me.

Once you decide on your Halloween costume you then need to accessorize it of course. Whether it is a spooky costume or a funny costume, there are some great accessories you can buy to enhance it. Wigs or masks or hats, you name it, they can all be found in the Amazon Store. Even the makeup you use to make yourself look particularly scary or evil is for sale on Amazon.

All I can say is that I wish we had had access to the range of Halloween costumes and accessories that kids today have, (not that it wasn't fun making our own though). In my day it was all about turning our house into a haunted house for the night, with bits of string hanging down in the dark like cobwebs to brush against our faces as we played hide and seek whilst dressed up in our home made Halloween costumes. It was still magical and spooky though, but I would have loved to have chosen one of the more exciting costumes available to today's Halloween loving children.

Happy Halloween

Hi Eiddwen, it is true, if kids today made their own Halloween costumes they would be laughed at by their friends, and probably accused of being 'poor', yet I used to really quite enjoy getting old sheets and cutting eye holes in them to make a 'Ghost' outfit.

Glad you enjoyed the Hub and thanks for commenting :)

      I agree with Mary,

When my older kids were small we use to make outfits out of black dustbin bags, brooms from little twigs tied to one end of something resembling a stick.

However ,my children were saying if they did that now all the other kids would laugh at them.

The sad part is that they are right.

A very useful hub and here's to many more to share on here.

      Take care

Very true marellen, it was good fun to design and make your own costumes, even if they were not as professional looking as the ones you can buy today.

In my day we didn't have any costumes to choose from, but we managed just the same and looked great. Its always fun to see the little ones because they look so cute.
