The Best Christmas Movies and Music

Updated on July 23, 2014

Getting into the Christmas Spirit

Santa Claus and his reindeer's, snow, lights, music, movies, gifts and family! This is what Christmas is all about and it is not about spending exorbitant amounts of money and buying the most expensive gifts just to impress someone, it is about family, togetherness and good old fashioned holiday cheer!

I am sure that everyone throughout the year has had some sort of problem or issue to face and we often get ourselves stuck into a rut but that changes once the festive season approaches.

The shopping centres with their décor and Christmas carols playing in the background while we shop for the gifts that will make someone smile and feel good as we take a break to meet up with a family member for a cup of coffee and a snack, to discuss the gift ideas that we have thought of;

The Christmas lights, Santa Claus, the red, green and gold of it all, makes up for the hard year and yes....we have all earned the right to be happy and cheerful!

A huge family gathering on Christmas eve or Christmas day with lunch that has been planned out for some time by your mom, the smell of turkey, the fantastic taste of stuffing and the decadent desserts that have been brought as a speciality from each family member, the laughter, the tears and the feeling of warmth, love and happiness for this special time, making Christmas worth the wait.

The rut that you have been stuck in, the financial or relationship troubles that you have been through, are all forgotten, forgiven and disappear just for this!

For those people that have not been able to find their holiday cheer and festive spirit, we have a couple of fantastic movies and music that will put you in the mood.

Christmas Movies to Remember

There are so many movies that have come out for the festive season throughout the years and the ones that have stuck out and been remembered as classics are the ones that will make you cry and make you feel good at the same time.

For those who are not into Christmas and have no reason to celebrate, buy gifts or accept invitations, the movie for you to watch is," Scrooged." Bill Murray starred in this 1980s classic and it changes your opinion on Christmas and makes you think about the person that you are.

It is a very old eighties movie but I still enjoy watching it a it gets me into the mood for the festive season. Almost a build up to Christmas and once you have watched it, you will learn the importance of family and friends, set aside the working hours and you will want to make time for those you love!

Scrooged - Bill Murray

Home Alone

This is also a great movie to get you into the festive mode!

Macaulay Culkin is the lead actor and he gets left at home while his family rush to the airport for their Christmas vacation. The things that he gets up to and the comedy aspect is terrific, while he learns to fend for himself. Definitely worth watching.

Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard and Catherine O Hara are also in the cast for this movie.

There were sequels to this but number one was the best of all of them.

Keep your eye on your kids during the crazy shopping and family events as this movies shows you how quickly accidents can happen and how easily you can forget things at home!

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation

Chevy Chase is one of my favourite comedy actors and this movie is hilarious and guaranteed to make you appreciate your own family and Christmas.

The movie is based on the Griswold family who spend Christmas with their in - laws and for Clark Griswold things never seem to go well but facing family and waiting for the arrival of his bonus cheque, helps him deal with the problems and stress that his crazy family bring.

I absolutely love this movie as it shows you how crazy family can be altogether in one place! At the end of the day, after arguments and the stress we all cause each other, family is important and Christmas brings everyone together.

It was released in 1989 and is still a good movie to watch today.

Also starring Beverly D Angelo, Juliette Lewis and a very young Johnny Galecki (Big Bang Theory)

This movie was fantastic and it is full of crazy family drama, décor problems and Chevy Chase loosing it!!!

It's a Wonderful Life

This is an all time classic, loved by everyone and watched every single year. They even have it playing in the background on television sets in the Christmas movies.

It is a sad story but has a fabulous ending which gives the true meaning to Christmas.

This movie was first released in 1946. They re - released the movie in 2012, with a better picture quality movie.

This is a must see and it will make you laugh and cry and cry and laugh!

A father works in the bank and financial problems lead him to want to commit suicide. The events that take place show the true meaning of life and it is a feel good movie that has been popular in every home since it's release.

Miracle on 34th Street

This movie was first released in 1947.

An old man by the name of Kriss Kringle fills in for a drunk Santa in Macy's annual thanksgiving parade. He becomes such a hit with the department store that they want to use him regularly as their Santa. Kriss Kringle claims that he is the actual Santa, which leads to a court case to determine his mental state and his authenticity.

A great Christmas movie, with a good holiday vibe to it!

Elf

For a comedy Christmas this movie is hillarious! Wil Ferrell, James Caan, Bob Newhart and Zooey Deschannel act in this movie and it will make you laugh!

A man that is large and has been raised in the North Pole does not fit into the elf community. He is sent to the U.S.A. to find his true identity and during his visit, has many unusual events that occur.

The Polar Express

An animated movie released in 2004, with the voice of Tom Hanks.

A young boy boards a magical train on Christmas eve and does not believe in Christmas.

He is taken for a ride to the North Pole where he goes on a journey of self - discovery.

This is a great movie for those who do not believe and will definitely put the spirit of Christmas back into your heart.

The Best Music for Christmas

Music makes the world go around and it picks you up when you are feeling down. Christmas music is so wonderful and gets you into the spirit quickly! There is nothing better than putting up your tree with the family whilst listening to Christmas carols playing in the background as you and your family sing along whilst decorating the tree.

Shopping is made more pleasant with the Christmas music playing in every store or even lisening to it on your i.pod will make your shopping experience a fantastic one, even if you have to stand in lines for hours.

Here are some of the best Christmas songs of all time!

Last Christmas - George Michael

This song has been played every Christmas and for many it is a classic. First performed in 1984 by Wham with George Michael.

The music video was also popular and I had to put it onto the list because so many of us love this song.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

Many artists have covered this song but my favourite is by Frank Sinatra.

Judy Garland sang the original and it is also terrific.

It is not Christmas until you have heard this song!

A warm and hearty song and the version by Frank is magnificent.

Do they know it's Christmas

This song was performed by many artists together in 1984. It was made to raise funds for poverty in Ethiopia. Bob Geldof produced the song and all the money made from the single went to charity.

Rocking Around the Christmas Tree

Brenda Lee sand this song in 1958. It is so festive and gets you moving. When you listen to this one you will want to put on a christmas hat and dance around!

I absolutely love this one as it really gets you into a happy mood. I suggest putting this onto your i.pod whilst waiting in the lines when shopping.

I Wish it Could be Christmas Everyday

Wizard performed this song and it has been a classic for many during Christmas. It was first produced in 1973.

The band were from the U.K and this song is vibrant and fun.

Fairytale of New York

The Pogues performed this song in 1987 featuring Kirsty MacColl. The words are not very beautiful but the song has something magical to it and it is worth a listen.

Merry Christmas Everybody

Slade performed this song in 1973. It has also become a classic and is played throughout the world every christmas season.

Jingle Bells Rock

Bobby Helms sang the original in 1957. This song has become a festive classic that will put you into the Christmas spirit right away.

It's Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas

Bing Crosby sang this Christmas hit but it was written by Meredith Wilson in 1951. The song was originally titled "Its beginning to look like Christmas."

Many artists covered the song but it was made famous by Perry Como and the Fontaine sisters.

Let it Snow

This was composed by Jule Styne in 1945. It has been covered by many artists but was first recorded by Vaughn Monroe.

My favourite singer for this one is Dean Martin!

Christmas Holiday Fever

What is your favourite past time during Christmas?

I would have to say that my favourite is definitely the family gathering on Christmas Eve, where we have a huge feast and listen to music. Christmas day is a major feast with delicious traditional food, wine and music. It is something to look forward to the entire year and there is nothing better than spending this time with the ones that you love.

The decorating of the Christmas tree is also fun as we put on the music and sing a long whilst each member of the family decorates.

The shopping to me is stressful but I do enjoy it and I especially love the look on everyone's faces when they open their presents that have taken me ages to buy.
