The Best Gift Ideas for New Grandparents

Updated on November 16, 2011

When I became a parent, I started to appreciate my parents in ways I never had before. Most new parents rely on a lot help from their parents in the beginning. While I don’t know any grandparents who mind babysitting or donating boxes of diapers, it is nice to show your appreciation for your children’s grandparents through thoughtful and meaningful gifts. If your parents are anything like mine, they don’t really need anything, which can make gift-giving a challenge. Whether you are looking for a birthday gift, Christmas or Hanukkah gift, or Mother's or Father's Day gift, here are some ideas for all budgets that are classy and unique.

Gadgets

A digital picture frame is a great gift for grandparents. The recipient can use it to show off their loved ones or relieve treasured memories. Or, if they're not technologically inclined, give them one preloaded with photos of all their grandchildren. You could also load photos of many generations of your family as a way to preserve family history and keep old stories alive.

Live across the country and not able to visit often? Give your parents a webcam so they can Skype with their grandkids. Skype is free, and being able to see their grandkids beats a phone call any day. Most webcams are easy to install on a computer, and they'll be off and chatting in no time. They'll probably be surprised to see how many people they know on Skype!

Keepsake Jewelry

Give a grandmother the way to keep her grandkids close to her heart. There are numerous options for keepsake jewelry that commemorates grandchildren. Jewelry with birthstones representing all her grandchildren are pretty and colorful gifts. Bracelets or necklaces with photo charms are also precious and will grab attention. I personally like jewelry with personalized nicknames, names, or initials. My mother-in-law has been dubbed "MeMe", and so this year I'm getting her a bracelet which says that. And don’t forget Grandpa! Photo cuff links are a sweet way to wear his heart on his sleeve. These are all are all gifts that a grandparent would wear proudly.

Tote Bags

If your parent watches your children frequently, they may need to haul a lot of gear with them when they leave the house. A personalized tote bag is a great gift for a grandparent who feels they may be too mature for diaper bags. You could get it monogrammed as a smart looking way to personalize it. Add in a bag organizer insert. It is a great option to include to store wipes, diapers, ointments, and bibs in a roomy tote bag. They can remove it when they're not with their grandchildren. A nice quality tote bag lets them know that you appreciate all they do for your kids, and you want them to look stylish while they do it.

Other Gifts

Still not inspired? Are your parents already up on the latest technology? Not into jewelry? There are still other things you can get them that recognize their special status as grandparents. A chalkboard coffee mug is cute, and lets the grandparent display messages or art from their grandchild as they drink their coffee. A matching apron set for adults and children is a great gift for a grandparent that loves to bake or cook and wants share that with their grandchildren. Finally, brag books are a quintessential grandparent gift, even in this age of digital photos.Grandparents who don't have smart phones or aren't computer savvy can still show off their adorable grandchildren. Good luck shopping and keep these ideas in mind for the perfect gift!
