Laura makes ASCII art, using MS Notepad. (Since 1998). She is currently exploring adding colour to the plain text to make postcards.

The Nutcracker from the Christmas Ballet

There aren't a lot of nutcrackers in ASCII art. It's a shame, they are elegant looking. The Nutcracker is the Christmas tradition based on a ballet. It's something beautiful that hasn't come from the standard Christmas traditions to do with baking, shopping or religion.

Have you ever been to the ballet and seen The Nutcracker?

My Grandmother used to take myself, my sisters and our female cousins to The Nutcracker ballet when it was performed in Toronto. It was a big deal then. We all dressed up and took the buses to get there. It would be at the Royal Alex theatre, a very grand place. We were sitting in the balcony, high up enough that it would scare me to look down as we left at the end of the show. I was allowed to bring the opera glasses. I let my sisters have a look too but I was the oldest so I carried them in my purse and collected them back again to take home. It was all pretty special from start to finish.

I like the nutcracker, his military bearing and his fancy dress uniform. Although there is a lot of detail it would actually not be so hard to create an ASCII art nutcracker. Try it!
