The Craziest, Wildest Holiday Destinations Ever?

Updated on December 21, 2015

From Crazy Vegas Parties to Bloukrans Bungy and Beyond!

Plan the Ideal Extreme Vacation Package

If you're the type of holidaymaker who likes to be thrilled and fulfilled on your vacations, you're going to love this post. We've been scouring the literature in search of the most unexpected holiday destinations you could ever hope to frequent, and we've got a bang up list of hot destinations for you to visit. Kicking things off is America's adult playground of wild entertainment, beautiful girls, crazy nightclubs, casino gambling as far as the eye can see, and raucous entertainment 24/7. If you're still uncertain what we are referring to, you have clearly never been to Las Vegas, Nevada!

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada

What makes Vegas such an enticing holiday destination? Is it the glitz and glamour of the bright lights and big city action? Perhaps it's the throngs of people lining Las Vegas Boulevard, or the bustling activity inside the world's most iconic casinos such as the MGM Grand, the Luxor, Treasure Island, the Bellagio, Caesars Palace, New York New York or the Excalibur? They say nothing good happens after dark, but in Las Vegas anything can happen at any time. This is truly the one city in the world where people are allowed to be as decadent as is legally permissible.

You fancy drinking Sex on the Beach, perhaps downing a six-pack of Budweiser out in the street – you're free to go wild. Vegas truly is party town to the max. If you've got a penchant for wild action, glittering casino games, and pulse-pounding parties – this is your town. They don't call it Sin City for nothing! And the freedoms that you're afforded in Las Vegas extend to smoking too. While you're not allowed to smoke marijuana in Las Vegas, Nevada as you are in Colorado, you can indulge in fine Cuban cigars, cigarettes, e-cigarettes and pretty much anything that is legal on the streets.

And if it gets a bit too much for you with all the traffic, commotion and unruly behaviour, you can always head out to the Hoover Dam on a guided helicopter tour, perhaps go and fire a semiautomatic machine gun, or take your pick of countless premium-grade Vegas shows. You've got everything from David Copperfield at the MGM Grand, to Carrot Top at the Luxor. Comedy clubs, nightclubs, girls, girls, girls! Yes it's true! Las Vegas is America's adult playground.

African Adventures: The Call of the Wild

Let's say you're not into the concrete jungle, faux appeal of Las Vegas, Nevada. Perhaps you are wild at heart and you want to try something that you've never done before. No I'm not referring to jumping out of an airplane on a parachute, or taking a helicopter flight over Tampa Bay in Florida. Let's go completely wild and head on over to Africa, notably Bloukrans Bridge. If you're wondering how to pronounce that, it's pronounced as follows: blow-krance. This is a holiday hotspot you probably never even knew existed.

First of all, you have to be an adrenaline junkie. If you don't have a desire for doing something completely crazy, you better skip this entry and move onto the next one. We're talking Bloukrans Bungy jumping and this is extreme. The actual bridge is 216m high – that's exceptionally high. Okay it's not as high as the Stratosphere Hotel in Las Vegas which stands 350.2m high – but it's a daunting prospect nonetheless. Fortunately, you won't have to jump that complete distance – the actual jump on the cord is approximately 160m.

Getting to the top of the Bloukrans Arch takes some doing. You'll have to traverse a walkway that is located on the underside of the road deck in order to make it to the top. If you're thinking about jumping in tandem with friends, relatives, or your mom – forget about it. This South African adrenaline-loaded Bungy jump is going to set you back approximately $53 per person at current exchange rates and it is the #1 highest commercial Bungy jumping bridge. In simple terms: there is nowhere on earth where you will enjoy a better Bungy jump.

It's the real deal in every way possible. In fact, in 2008 the Bloukrans Bungy featured in 2 world records when a lady named Veronica Dean jumped 19 times in an hour, and a gentleman by the name of Bill Boschoff jumped a total of 101 times in just 24 hours. Among the many celebrities that frequent this exotic tourist destination are the following people: Prince Harry of England, Kelly Slater, President Thabo Mbeki and sports stars from the South African rugby team and cricket team. You never know who you are going to run into at this A-grade holiday destination.

A Walk on the Wild Side in Africa

Staying in Africa is a great idea if you're looking for an exotic, wild and enriching vacation. There are so many fantastic sites for you to see – we would need volumes of space to get through just a percentage of them. The Lion Park in Krugersdorp is a must-see attraction, if it's the last thing you ever do. This is definitely something to put on your bucket list. Don't worry though, you’re mostly safe unless of course you open your door or your windows while you are driving through. The lion dens are filled with anywhere from 20 to 100 hungry lions. While the drive-through is certainly well worth a visit, and the majestic animals are certainly impressive beyond compare – the real fun and games begin when you go to the lion cub enclosure.

For a nominal fee – negligible in dollar terms – you can walk into an enclosure with an assistant or two, and you will be able to get to play with cubs for 5 minutes and 10 minutes at a time. This has got to be the most unnerving and exhilarating experience you could ever imagine. While there are unethical methods used to keep lion cubs small at other parks around the world, this is not the case in South Africa. The animals are healthy, happy and growing fast! Beware: these are real lions with real teeth and real claws. You should wear a good pair of hiking boots and denim jeans, and wash your hands thoroughly when you exit the enclosure.

Other popular destinations in South Africa include the Kruger National Park, Sun City and the Pilansberg game reserve located nearby. The Mediterranean charm of Cape Town and the wine route in Stellenbosch and Kirstenbosch are awesome, and of course the Zulu Kingdom itself – KwaZulu. This features on South Africa's east coast and it is a hive of activity for holidaymakers looking for activity of a different kind entirely. There are rickshaws and Zulus in traditional dress waiting to pull you through the city of Durban. Remember to keep your belongings close and safe, because there are criminal elements in the city that you should be aware of.

Visit an Ancient European City – Lisbon, Portugal or Leipzig, Germany

You may be wondering what it is about Lisbon, Portugal that is so enticing to a holidaymaker? Well, it is one of the oldest cities in the world – dating back to 1200 BC. The city comes replete with tantalizing seafood, an affordable selection of the finest wines, and history as far as the eye can see. Not enough? The accommodations in Lisbon are surprisingly affordable – way more affordable than you could expect for an equivalent vacation in London, England or Paris, France.

Once you have seen Lisbon, you may wish to consider Germany. But don't go to the popular tourist hotspots in Berlin and Dresden – try eastern Germany, Leipzig. Like Lisbon, Portugal, Leipzig has a history that dates back at least 1000 years. But it is a cosmopolitan city replete with tremendous history, a thriving cultural melting pot and plenty of economic activity. Since this city is off the radar as far as tourism goes, most everything here is really affordable. You can in fact stay at the prestigious Westin Leipzig hotel for under $100 per night. Forget about getting the same deals in cities like Berlin or Munich though.

The Exotic Allure of the Canary Islands

If you're European, you already know about the Canary Islands. These exotic islands are stunning beyond belief. The two most populous – tourist-laden – islands include the likes of Tenerife and Lanzarote. The other islands include Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, as well as El Hierro. Of course there are many islets along the way, and these are equally stunning. The main tourist islands are accessible directly from the UK and Europe by direct flights. They are located just north of Morocco and they belong to Spain.

These islands form part of Spain's 17 independent communities. The capital cities of these islands are Santa Cruz de Tenerife as well as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The total population as at 2011 was 2,117,519. The islands gained autonomy on 16 August, 1982. If you're wondering what makes these exotic islands so devastatingly beautiful – simply look skyward as you take in the scenic backdrops and the magnificent, lush, perennial foliage all around. It definitely has a relaxed island-style way about it, with all the appeal of Spanish culture thrown in for good measure.

Are You Feeling the Jungle Heat Yet?

A continent which very few travelers from the UK tend to visit is South America. Therein is the first mistake. South America, or Latin America as it is otherwise known is a tourist hotspot of epic proportions. Besides for the obvious entertainment in Brazil and Argentina – football, there are beautiful women, beaches as far as the eye can see, and a smorgasbord of delectable cuisine to titillate your senses. But one country that many folks mistakenly avoid is Ecuador. Every year on 24 December, this South American country plays host to Pase del Nino in Cuenca. If you're interested in the Nativity, you will be absolutely delighted by what you're about to see. It is held at the San Francisco Convent, and the Baby Jesus will be dressed up in all sorts of different costumes.

Christmas Eve deserves to be coupled with New Year celebrations, and when you visit the Anos Viejos for New Year's Eve celebrations, you will not be disappointed. All the local Ecuadorians will be making marionettes to burn as an offering for the New Year. Now the effigy process typically takes the form of an unliked or unwanted person – avoid burning likenesses of present spouses or your kids – that's just taboo! Most folks tend to burn politicians – they are considered worthy of such treatment. One of the most beautiful cities in Ecuador is Quito, and you should definitely try to taste the local cuisine, sample the music and dance and enjoy the delights of a whole new world.
