The True Meaning of Christmas

Updated on November 25, 2013

Christmas In The Old days

Years ago the excitement of Christmas was a holiday of surprises, that came once a year. In today society Christmas comes every paid day.

I remembered when Christmas in our home was something special. My parents was poor and couldn't afford to buy gifts but our home was filled with the spirit of Christmas. Each year we waited for that special Christmas, which never was.

Each year we went through the same routine, chopping a tree why mom stay home making decorations .We would find the tallest tree for mom to hung all the trimming with not one gifts underneath.

Christmas Eve night mom would start cooking, the aroma of the house was heavenly with the smell of ham, fried chicken, spareribs, cakes and pies . While we sat around a old wood stove to keep warm singing Christmas song and drinking hot apple cider.

At seven O'clock mommy instructed us to get our hats and coats because it was time for us to go to church and take part in the programs to receive a gift. In middle of the church floor stood a Christmas tree taller than the one we had at home, with a lot of beautiful gifts. All the poor children in the neighborhood had a gifts under the tree. These gifts was donated by the white people who knew black's couldn't afford to give gifts to their families on Christmas day.

All of use participated in the programs why parents sat back to watch their children. After the service was over each one of use went home placing our gift under the tree. we sat by the old wood stove to get warm before we went to bed.

Mommy was like a weather person going to the window checking to see if we would have a snowy Christmas. It's snowing she calmly spoke come and look at these beautiful flakes, it's millions she laughed. Every year when it snowed she recite her special poem to us.

Snow flakes are like beautiful butter flies and in the winter they flies and one is very white floating from the misty skies, I am sure they will bring a Christmas thought a message bring bright and fair These butterflies are also white as pure as Christ on Christmas night.

Now it's time to go to bed Santa will be here when you awake. The Next morning we would wake up to that one gift from the church, and bags of fruits made by mom. It really wasn't what we got, it was all about the spirit of Christmas . I sat back and think about those special Christmas's with nothing but the love of my mommy. These are special moments that I will treasure for ever.

Yeah, totally agree with jada67. Nowadays, to children, christmas means gifts, expensive ones. No gifts, no joy. Olden days are still the best, original feelings and atmosphere.

Christmas today isn't as important to children as it was to us. We had nothing and was happy. Today children have to have all kind of expensive to be happy. jada67
