The Very Hungry Caterpillar First Birthday Party
The Very Hungry Caterpillar Theme
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Pinterest Parties Galore!
Pinterest is swimming with tons and tons of ideas for children's birthday parties. You can get lost for hours just browsing through the many options that pop up from a simple search of "First Birthday Party Themes". So, how do you go about picking the best theme? I wanted something that was colorful, easy, and not too over the top, while still portraying a fun theme. I decided to go with "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" theme. It was so much fun taking the children's book and portraying different parts at the party.
Giant Balloon Caterpillar
I wanted the decorations to reflect aspects of the book. Of course there needed to be a giant caterpillar. This was created by using red and green balloon. The legs, eyes, and antennas were cut out from cardstock and taped to the balloons. I used small push pins to attach the balloons to the wall and make it appear as if the caterpillar was climbing around the door frame!
At the beginning of the book it talks about the "warm sun coming up", so I decorated the ceiling to mimic the sun. It was a great focal point!
To make the sun, I started off with several orange plastic table clothes (the $1 ones from Walmart or Dollar Tree). I cut them into strips and used push pins and tape to attach them to the ceiling and near the base of our dining light fixture. I let the excess dangle down in the center. Next I incorporated yellow streamers. One twisted streamer was strung down the middle of each tablecloth. To finish the sun, I took long strands of ribbon and curled them. I attached those to the center of the sun.
We have these great shelves in our dining area. I use them to decorate for the seasons, holidays, and birthdays. The book is full of pops of color and I wanted to make sure the shelves reflected that. I purchased an assortment of candies and used the cute little glass jars to display them in. Of course the book needed to be on display. The "Happy Birthday" pennant banner was made by me out of card stock and letter stickers. I also made a pennant banner to hang on the from of the high chair that said "I am 1". Once again, like the other decorations, this came together very quickly; it was easy, inexpensive, yet visually appealing!
Lets talk food!
The book centers around all the foods the very hungry caterpillar eats. The food was SO SIMPLE for this party! We just served what the caterpillar ate…plus some yummy chicken salad made by my father-in-law!
I served the "5 days" of fruit in these colorful buckets and found great printables online to label everything! Other items of food from the book were served like cheese, ice cream cones, pickles, and sausage. I also used pictures of the caterpillar to decorate other things, like the jar holding the cute green paper straws!
A birthday party isn't complete without a cake. And since this was a first birthday party a small smash cake was also necessary. I made both cakes and frosted them with white buttercream frosting. I used brightly colored fondant to decorate the cake. Lots and lots of circles were cut from the fondant, along with the different fruits the caterpillar ate. The caterpillar and sun were also made from fondant!

Fun and Easy Party!
I had so much fun putting this party together. Because of the book it was a super easy theme. The decorations were simple to make, the food was a given, and all in all an inexpensive first birthday party. What themes have you used for birthday parties? What themes do you plan to use in the future?
