30th Birthday Idea for Him or Her: Thirty Gifts Lottery

Updated on August 09, 2013

The Terribly Terrific Thirties

Turning thirty can be a scary time for people, especially since popular culture makes everyone think they've hit their prime at twenty-three and then it's all downhill from there. Instead of perpetuating this awful myth, show your husband, boyfriend, girlfriend or wife why his or her thirties are going to be the best years ever! Start this third decade of life the fun way with a special "thirty things lottery"!

Thirty Things Lottery at a Glance:

  1. Generate a list of gifts that matches your girl or guy's personality
  2. Buy thirty things off of your list, keeping it on the cheap side
  3. Wrap these thirty things and number them from one to thirty
  4. Keep a list of what each present is for a backup
  5. Number thirty pieces of paper to make a lottery
  6. Have him or her draw a number every thirty minutes

What Gift Should I Get Someone Turning 30?

Usually when trying to generate gift ideas, our thoughts instantly go to something big, flashy, expensive and breathtaking. You want to give someone a present that'll be appreciated and not sold at next year's yard sale, right?

You've probably gnawed your fingers to the bone trying to decide the most special and meaningful gift to get your 29-year-old. Gifts can be tough to get for others, especially the ones who say things like, "Don't get me anything" and "I don't need anything", or the people who seem to HAVE everything already.

Step 1: Make a List

Grab a sheet of paper and brainstorm some gift ideas. Since you're going to be buying thirty things, don't shoot for really expensive things (unless you're made out of gold or something).

Is there a special comic book or picture that could be put on display? Does s/he have something old and beat up that could be updated with something better? Is there something thrilling you two could do together to make an awesome memory? Is there a certain household pet that would keep him or her company?

Even the most simple ideas could work here. Just because something costs less than a dollar doesn't mean that it can't be used and won't be appreciated.

If you need even more ideas, walk around in different stores to see what they have. Things may catch your eye that you wouldn't have ever thought of, and you can get some of your shopping out of the way at the same time. Also, don't underestimate the meaning of a hug, kiss, cuddle or other romantic things as gifts.

Step 2: Purchase and Wrap

When you've got your list perfected and your budget is firmly set, go shopping for all the things on your list.

If you're running into expensive things, try shopping online, a dollar store, or a thrift store to see if you can get the same thing for much cheaper. You may find some other treasures to add to your lottery in case another gift doesn't work out.

Next, wrap all of your gifts and give them a number. If you're unable to wrap a particular gift (food, plant, romantic stuff), keep a list of all the gifts and their corresponding numbers.

Step 3: Make the "Lottery"

You can fold up pieces of paper and write a number on each one, fold them, then put them in a bowl for later. You can also use:

  • Marbles in a bowl or jar with numbers on them
  • Ping pong balls with numbers
  • A piece of paper with numbers 1-30 written for the birthday boy or girl to cross off as numbers are chosen
  • Paper strips, straws, or popsicle sticks with numbers on them
  • A deck of "cards" made from note cards or pieces of paper with numbers on them

Step 4: Happy Birthday!

Take out all the presents that you've squirreled away, your lottery and the list of presents if you made one.

Tell the birthday boy or girl that it's time to play the lottery. S/he will look at all the presents and think, 'Ooh, I get to open these all right now!' but since thirty is the big number for the day, break the news to him or her: One present every thirty minutes.

This way it'll make your presents last for longer and it'll keep your lover wondering what's coming next. The dreaded day about the big scary number THIRTY will be awesome and fun because of it!

Great Hub! I'll be 30 in a few months and my boyfriend has already said Batman will be a go-to gift idea to help make me feel "younger" since he's a couple years younger than I am. I suppose that puts me in the "nerdy" category. Proud of it! Thanks! =)

The list of things you love about the person is not only free, but it's priceless! A gift like this - that has some thought to it - is really special. Great idea.
