Three Fun and Functional Last Minute Gift Ideas

Updated on August 13, 2012

There’s nothing worse than remembering at the last second that you need a gift for someone you care about. While you might run to the store for a gift, you can also try one of the following last minute gift ideas and save yourself some of the hassle and time.

Gift Certificates

Granted, buying a gift certificate still requires a trip to the store, but you can still save yourself some time. Try visiting a grocery store like Kroger, which has a large selection of gift cards available. Many stores now offer gift cards from movie theaters, restaurants, clothing stores, video rental shops, and even gift cards for online gaming. You can even find boxes and envelopes for the gift cards.

If you’re running short on time, consider printing off your own gift certificate. Let the person know that a gift card is coming, and you can even let him or her pick his own card. For example, you might discover that your niece loves a certain clothing store, which lets you pick out a card that she’ll actually use.

Printing Gift Cards

One of the best ways that you can treat someone to a last minute gift is by creating your own gift card. Head to your computer and print off a basic certificate that entitle the recipient to the gift of time. You might treat your brother to a night of free baby-sitting, give your parents free yard work, or give your younger sister a shopping trip in the near future. Just make sure that you give the person a gift certificate that he or she will actually use. You can dress up the gift certificate as much as you want.

Magazine Subscriptions

If you are like most people, you probably have dozens of back and current issues of your favorite magazine laying around the house. As long as the person in your life has the same taste in magazines, you can easily turn a back issue into a Christmas, birthday, graduation, or anniversary gift. Wrap a large ribbon around the front of an issue, and tuck a note inside, letting the recipient know that a subscription is on the way to his or her house. All you need to do is fill out one of the insert cards inside the magazine and send it off. With a little imagination and creativity, you can find the perfect last minute gift idea without even leaving your house.
