On Being GRATEFUL

An Upstate WNYer,Paula shares her expertise in preparing for a season of Old Man Winter, while remaining, productive, happy, safe & warm.

2015 Update

As we approach another Thanksgiving celebration in the United States of America, it is imperative we call to mind that for which we can be grateful. Not only in our individual personal lives, but as Americans in the midst of the 2016 Presidential campaign.

Although this is an integral political process for us every four years, there is an especially serious burden upon us in this particular coming election. Never before have we felt such urgency to be focused, informed and active. This world that we share with billions of people is in utter turmoil. We haven't the luxury to be unconcerned nor disconnected from any part of this. It is our country, our world and our continued existence at stake.

This year, as we look at the past, at this moment and into our future, we need to look with clear heads, open minds and a sense of urgency to proceed as a determined and united force. As we bow our heads together in thanksgiving for our daily bread, we have no choice but to ask for wisdom and the strength to be the light that will pave the path to Peace throughout the world....and the "Good" of all mankind.

2016 Update: Incredibly, another year has passed~much too quickly this time~almost like a fierce wind storm blown through our lives. The election over. We have a President Elect. For the sake of my many friends and loved ones who have taken the results this year, harder than past years, I've chosen to reserve further comment and get on with our Thanksgiving thoughts.....So my friends....

Smile each Day, and let Gratitude Prevail....

A lavish feast will grace the family dinner table for most of us on Thanksgiving Day. We will sit round this table, join hands and bow our heads in silent contemplation. We feel deeply grateful for good health, loving family and friends......perhaps a significant achievement or the strength in surviving a crisis. For all the reasons we may be grateful on this day, the love and concern for each other that brings us together is celebrated with true humility and a sense of peace.

The warmth of smiles and conversation renew our bonds with a promise of trust in one another. It's a special time. These are moments we treasure. Each year we look forward to this day to be mindful of the gifts received throughout the year.

Although it can seem unlikely to us, we hear of individuals not at all grateful but instead bitter and dissatisfied with their life. We cross paths daily with some of these pathetic souls. The pessimist, envious, and chronic complainer. For these individuals, nothing is ever enough....not good enough, important enough or big enough. It can be difficult to accept that they simply cannot appreciate the beauty, goodness and miracles of life which are what truly matter. So bless their misguided hearts and wish them well. In a strange sort of way, we can be thankful that there are those who teach us valuable lessons.. They are a continual reminder to us that we must focus on the positive and spread good will.

Not for just one day

It should not happen that we remember to express our appreciation for what we have, merely once a year. The festivities of Thanksgiving Day is an American tradition, first celebrated by the Pilgrims and the American Indian many years ago. They came together in peace and friendship to enjoy the fruits of their labors. They were compelled to praise the gods for the foods that sustained them, as well as the common bonds that united them.

Now today, in this generation, despite the economic turmoil, the ravishes of mother nature's devastating storms and floods, we have stood tall. Throngs of fellow-Americans who were suffering and placed in danger were offered help and support, food and shelter. More importantly they felt the love, kindness and genuine concern from those who came to their aid. They were lifted up by generosity and acts of kindness to assure they would not be deserted in their time of desperate need. For all that they lost, they found faith in their own strengths through the power of unity. They will embrace gratitude of the deepest kind for those who ran to rescue when they reached out their hands.

Yes, believe it. There is always something to cling to.

In the best of times and worst of times, we can find both joy and solace in every instance. What brings us happiness is welcomed and what trials do not kill us, make us stronger. Love is found and sometimes lost but always leaves it's shadow with us. It's traces never leave us but taunt us to reach out to love once again. For without love, what is life?

There's always something to be thankful for....always something to move us forward. These are the gifts for which we are grateful. This is what we share with one another.

Inspire the man who feels he has nothing to give, for surely he must search his heart and know his worth. You are valuable in your own uniqueness, no matter the woes of what you lack. Offer your talents to bring laughter to the saddened and your arms to the child who feels alone. Be thankful for the chance to do these things and feel the pride you have a right to feel.

When all your efforts seem to fail, be grateful you had the strength to try. You're beginning to understand the gist. I see you smiling. I imagine your pleasure at seeing these truths. What is it man wants or what does he need? If he has what he needs, will he still want more?
Whatever the answer, this fact remains clear; when we share what we have, it returns ten-fold. In essence perhaps, yet it could be something beyond what our senses perceive.

Take time if you must, to give thought to your blessings, being careful to recognize all. I see that every day, surrounded by those we hold dear, will be special for you. All things worthwhile are worth struggling for, so do more than just scratch the surface. Dig deep and hard to find all of those gifts. You'll be balancing more than you dreamed. Beginning this year, vow to keep a journal of gifts you are granted and can graciously share with others throughout the year. Do not let them slip your mind...but keep your blessings in your heart and close at hand. We never know when we may want to pay one forward to the next in line to receive.

Wishes to You and Yours, for a Wonderful Day

Accept this gift of Inspiration to decorate your life with the love of treasured friends and family and precious memories that will live forever..... and give heartfelt thanks for every moment.......

Please do not wake to find you have lost what you did not treasure while in your midst. Hold closely and lovingly for as long as you're able.....give freely, accept graciously and laugh heartily! These are the precious gifts of life....ours exclusively for the taking.

Hold tight to all you are....be generous with all you possess .

My Love and Best Wishes to each and every one of you on this Thanksgiving Day and throughout the year. Paula

Awwww Honey....I can say the same about you! In fact, I think I just did. LOL

Such important life lessons told so eloquently. I am grateful for all the messages of admiration and understanding you leave on the articles I have written. Your notes always make me smile and help me to feel validated in my interpretation of things. Thanks so much, Paula. Your kindness to me has made you a piece of my heart. Your articles are so helpful in opening eyes and minds to what life's all about.

Well, the entire state of Texas needs to get their internet service act together! What a pain in your assets this must be. I'm on the phone at least once a week, without fail, having a "little chat," with one utility company or another. I'm sure there's a picture of me in every back office with a dagger through my head. Do I care? NO!

Thank you for mentioning Daniel Amen, I will look him up...sounds to me like he has some powerful & accurate information.

It's nice to know that there are those who can appreciate my down-to-earth-no-nonsense approach. MOST people prefer the flowery, sugar-coated, bloviating kind of Bull-feathers. For certain, I haven't the time for it nor can I tolerate hearing it come my way.

Your compliments are much too kind, but I'll take them! LOL...Thank you.

Now's as good a time as any to inform you that I'm slowly phasing myself down and away from Hubpages~~at least for a good period of time. I truly have much too much going on in my life and simply can't devote as much time to HP as I have for the past 6 years. ( and Yes, of course, my decision has evolved somewhat due to disillusionment & disgust with the way our site is run.....and NOT run.) So be it. Time for me to break away.

I cleaned up my account and unpublished 27 of my 97 articles. While all 97 were featured, I was not satisfied with their activity or the numbers they produced. I went in & did an edit on all 70 remaining, as I choose to leave my account active. I always want the option to stop by on occasion to poke my head in to say Hello.

I have met and bonded with some of the nicest, most talented people in the world.....who will remain in my heart. You are one of these special individuals.

Wishing you the best~always. Peace, Paula

I listened/watched a couple of YouTube videos the other day by Daniel Amen who is a psychiatrist and a brain disorder specialist. One of the things he recommends to prevent brain shrinkage (which happens naturally with age to all of us unless we actively fight it) and to heal the brain from trauma, etc., is to consciously be grateful for one's advantages and benefits and the gifts we receive essentially from God. Look him up (Daniel Amen) and watch some of his videos which are fairly short. I thought his information was fascinating.

I have to apologize for being so slow to respond to your lovely comment on one of my articles recently. I depend entirely on public Internet these days and sadly, our entire state of Texas has been deserted by Verizon and left to one of its subsidiaries -- Frontier.

Not bad enough that I must do my computer work at the mercy of the hours of public institutions and businesses, but Frontier service tends to go off and on throughout the day. Out for a minute, several minutes, an hour -- or 2, here and there, sometimes several times in a day, sometimes fine all day, but the next day is a nightmare, and it makes it hard to get everything done.

Please know that I appreciate and value every comment that you take your precious time to make. Everyone's time is precious because it's really the only thing we have that truly matters -- and we never even know for sure how much of it we've got! So I always appreciate every time anyone spends some of their time on me.

I have always appreciated your down to earth no nonsense approach. Even when I may not agree with something, I know you have given thought to your stance and that you didn't just pull it out . . . well, you know from where, and that means a lot to me.

My opinion remains solid. I believe you are one of the best writers on this site and that you do not begin to enjoy the appreciation you should be getting and that you deserve. I may not always say that, but it has been my opinion for a long time, as I think you know.

Your message here is right on and I hope your readers will take it to heart. Always wishing you the best of everything, Paula . . .

Carol.....We all experience sadness now and then. It's part of the human condition. Sometimes it's not even necessary to fight it. There's a reason why we feel this way and often it needs to run it's course.....(almost like a cold......no matter how hard we try to mask the symptoms, the cold leaves our system in it's own time)

Of course you can soothe yourself by being conscious of all the beauty around you and the blessings you have received. Positive thoughts and doing whatever makes us momentarily happy & peaceful is what we should try to chase away the blues.

Sending you hugs and friendly thoughts Carol.....You are a lovable woman with much to be thankful for and "tomorrow" will be brighter.

A comfortable night's sleep can work wonders......Peace, Paula

Great Prescription, Dr. Sunshine. And let's remember washing down that capsule of Happiness with morning coffee (or whatever liquid it is, that revs your engine).....It's just a tiny capsule, but powerful as hell.

The list of ingredients is outrageous: Love, inner peace, beautiful babies, music, nature, friends, family, neighbors and MEMORIES.

Prescriptions aren't always easy to follow and at times we can even forget....or think,"we don't need it," to feel well. Withdrawal side effects, can be devastating and destructive....Oh My.....anxiety, bitterness, depression, anger, selfishness and the worst of all....despair.

Thank you, gf...you always manage to know exactly what to do and say. We can all find the benefit in a dose of Sunshine......My Love to you and all Hubbers and Hubettes......I miss you, more than I can say!

What a wonderful inspiration to keep us aware of so many things we should be thankful for. I'm thankful for my lovely family, and the fact I have roof over my head. I also agree there are people who are never thankful for anything, and you have to feel sorry that they are so miserable with their lot! I'm not rich with money but I am rich with the love from my family and that's far more important to me because money is not and never has been my main objective in life! Loved your hub, voted up,

Hi Pavlo! So glad you stopped by again.....I was able to get a little info from my Uncle about my grandparents. However, I am now determined to try to do some searches and dig up as much as possible.

Apparently, my GREAT grandparents (both sets) left the Ukraine, to escape crazy Hitler, for Galicia, Austria, which is where my grandparents were born. My grandfather, on Dec 4th, 1894.....in the village of Skoryki, State of Zbaraz....Country, Galicia, Austria.........which of course, means nothing to me, until I can see a map........My grandmother on June 13, 1896, Village of Luka, State of Horodenka....same country as my grandfather.......They both came to America, via Ellis Island in 1911, but did not meet until years later (in America).....

What I want now, is the info about their parents who were citizens of the Ukraine.....I recently learned that the best files for tracing ancestry can be found through an official agency run by members of the Mormon Church....so, soon I must visit that site to see what I might find.

Talk to you soon! YES!!! Thanksgiving is a tradition all people should celebrate!

Hi there and thanks for stopping by on this special day....We've already eaten......I'm surprised I could move far enough to reach the office.......The turkey is no longer stuffed. But we are!.......Have a blessed day.

Paula, what a wonderful gift you offer on this Thanksgiving day! In fact, I am reading your hub on Thanksgiving. What you say is true. If anyone has the capacity to read this, there are a multitude of reasons to give thanks. I wish I had the vintage Rolls Royce of my dreams, but I have a home, a wonderful son, my parents are still with me, I have a brother and a sister, niece, roof over my head, cats to love and I'm making dinner.

We all have reasons to show gratitude. It comes from within, not from without.

    Happy Thanksgiving, Paula!

What a beautiful hub. You have reminded us all what we already knew, but can so easily forget--that life is beautiful no matter what.

I've had some pretty serious bouts of bad health in the last year, but that's okay because it makes me really appreciate my good health now. I've also lost some friends to West Nile and cancer. While I truly miss them, I am extremely grateful that I was able to get to know them and love them while they were here on earth. They have made my life richer.

Since joining HP I have met so many inspirational people who have demonstrated to me through their writing that there are still many caring and compassionate people in the world. You all have made my life richer, and this Thursday I will include you in my Thanksgiving prayers.

    Have a very blessed Thanksgiving.

    Voted up: awesome and beautiful.

So much to be thankful for and so much to appreciate in our lives. My 88 year old mother-in-law has stage 4 ovarian cancer and three months ago was given six months to live with beginning alzheimer's, her soon to be 90 year old husband had has a hip replacement and leg amputation...yet to see them together and watch them is to know what love and thanksgiving is. They thank us constantly for all we do and we thank God that they are still with us.

Those who have lost so much in Sandy, have their lives and their resiliency. God help them as they rebuild.

Thank God for you Effer and everyone of our wonderful hubbers! God bless all and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Some say being a pessimist is the way to go so you wont be disappointed. They have a point but some of us will still hitch a ride on the optimism train as its destination is always to sunnier climes.

I totally agree that there is always something to be thankful for. I remind myself and others of that all the time. The older I get, Thanksgiving is the most important holiday and family get together for me. I am thankful all year round yet it all kind of comes together on that special Thursday. Thank you for writing this Paula and Happy Thanksgiving to your and your family.

Thank you so much, Alastar...and the very same to you and yours. I so appreciate hearing from you.

Just came in from the crisp Autumn air, and felt such a peace, in the dark, still night. I swear the sky was announcing something wonderful. Then I realized it's just this damned optimistic soul of mine. This is what I wish for everyone..........

While reading this recalled that a friend is going through a tough spell in their life and work but is still thankful for the good things they do have, be they ever so few at the moment. The power of unity is a very powerful one and should never be overlooked or forgotten. What you have here is a wonderful up lifting hub and reminder of what really and truly is important, very fine Lady Paula, very fine indeed. Happy Thanksgiving to you and the family my friend!

Paula, we don't have thanksgiving or anything like it in the UK but I think it's a holiday we could all do with in our lives, even if its purpose is to make us all look inwards every once in a while and appreciate our lives. I wish you and yours a happy holiday when it comes around:o)
