Updated on October 27, 2011

You don't need to be a teenager to figure out what teens like. Here are ten gift ideas for teenage girls.

1. Makeup Sampler Subscription

Companies like Loose Button (Canada) and Birch Box (U.S.) send out a little box of trendy makeup and beauty samples every month to those who are subscribed. These samples are 'deluxe' sized, meaning that they are smaller versions of the full-size product and not the kind that come in small packets that you have to rip open. With these deluxe samples, you can get many uses out of them and if you like what you get, you have the option of purchasing the full-size product through Loose Button/Birch Box, sometimes at a discounted rate.

This is a great gift to give a teenage girl who might be interested in makeup or thinking about trying new things. These subscription services ask you questions about products you like using and then sends you products based on how you answered the questions.

It costs about $10-12/month and you can choose how many months you'd like to subscribe for.

2. The Hunger Games Trilogy

The Hunger Games trilogy is written by Suzanne Collins and has become widely popular. It is filled with action, suspense, emotion and a hint of romance. This is a perfect gift to give a girl who likes reading books that have a page-turning plot, strong characters and are about a post-apocalyptic world.

If she has already read this trilogy, something similar would be the Books of Ember series which starts with the The City of Ember. It is written by Jeanne DuPrau and is also a story based in a post-apocalyptic world. It is about a city entirely underground with no knowledge of the world above. Their food supply (which consists of old cans and preserves in large warehouses) is dwindling and everyone is unsure of what will come. There are four novels in the series, and these are great books to read if you enjoy adventure, plot twists and surprises.

3. Fun Soap

Regular bars of soap can be boring. Luckily, there are several stores online that sell soap in fun shapes and scents!

Etsy is a website consisting of independent stores that sell handmade items. You can find all different types of soaps that are meant to look like desserts, animals, food and more!

Try purchasing different types of these soaps and putting them into a gift basket. It'll be a hit for sure!

4. Hair Colour (Manic Panic)

Though a lot of parents forbid their children from colouring their hair, few don't mind as teenagers need to express themselves during one of the most difficult times in their life. Though not for everyone, some teenagers will colour their hair and they might end up hating it.

Thankfully, a product called Manic Panic exists. It is a 'vegan' product meaning that it doesn't use any animal-based products or harsh chemicals. It is not permanent, but will give you bright and intense colour for at least a few days. This is the perfect gift to give if the girl you're buying for has coloured her hair before, or is thinking of doing so. Manic Panic is also a lot safer to use than the hair colour that you can typically find at the drug store. However, it will stain clothing. Check out their website for more information.

Manic Panic is not permanent, so if parents are wary at first, at least the colour won't last forever.

5. Nail Polish

Nail polish may not seem like an amazing gift to give, but lately there have been several 'break-throughs' in nail polish trends. While these two types of nail polishes aren't new, they have made a come back.

The first one is 'crackle' nail polish (sometimes called 'texture', 'shatter', or 'crack' nail polish), which is a top coat (that comes in basically any colour) that literally cracks a few seconds after you apply it. As a result, you see the underlying nail polish colour through the cracks.

The second is called 'magnetic' nail polish. It is a nail polish which, after holding the magnetic within the cap above wet polish, will create an effect, depending on the shape of the magnet.

These can both be purchased at Sephora.

Check out the two videos below for examples of both polishes!

Nail polish in general can be a great addition to any gift because it is another way of allowing teenage girls to express themselves, especially if they're not too into makeup yet, or if they like adding colour to their everyday look.

6. A Magazine Subscription

Being a teenage girl can be difficult, especially at school. Teenagers have a lot of questions, but aren't always able to ask them.

Magazines aimed at teenage girls have articles that discuss topics relevant to teens and also feature inexpensive alternatives to trendy clothes, hair and makeup products, jewellery and accessories. They also have articles about eating healthy and making good choices when it comes to personal health.

Seventeen and TeenVogue are both very good magazines for teenage girls. They don't just focus on celebrity gossip but try to highlight features that make people good role models.

7. Plants vs. Zombies

Video games aren't just for boys! Many teenage girls like playing video games as well.

Plants vs. Zombies is a fairly recent game that has been released on many platforms (Mac, PC, iPhone/iPod Touch, Nintendo DS, etc) and is a 'tower of defense' and strategy game. It involves placing plants with special abilities in a strategic manner in order to stop zombies from invading your home. It has several levels and types of plants and zombies.

Check out the video below for a glimpse of what the game looks like in action!

This is a good game to give to a teenage girl because it is bright and fun-looking (and is also an addicting game!). It doesn't need an internet connection or any extra equipment to play. It is easy to learn and play and provides hours of fun!

Plants vs. Zombies can be purchased almost anywhere that games are sold (EB Games, WalMart, etc) and of course, online as well.

8. Affordable Makeup

Teenage girls often start wearing makeup when they're in high school. It can be a difficult time trying to pick out the right colours or the rights brands without spending a lot of money.

A great gift idea would be giving her affordable makeup products from a brand called E.L.F. (Eyes Lips Face). Their products range from $1-5 each and are great quality for the price. They are available at Target, Zeller's, Winner's and online. This way, you can introduce her to the brand so that she can pick out other products in the future without having to spend a lot of money.

The best thing about E.L.F. is that they have the consumer in mind when they make these products. They create products that are very similar to ones that have become popular, but are often over-priced. They also have great customer service! Their prices are very reasonable and because most of their products are $1, you can try many of their products and many of their colours/shades as well!

9. Jewellery and Accessories

There are many greats stores that sell accessories and jewellery, and they are often geared towards teenage/tween girls. Stores such as Claire's and Ardene sell a lot of brightly coloured and fun accessories at affordable prices. Putting together a gift bag full of these accessories (and maybe some fun soap from #3!) will be a great gift to give that will spruce up many of her outfits.

You can even consider bringing her to the store and letting her pick out some of the gifts!

10. Clothing and Gift Cards

Stores like Forever 21, American Eagle, Hot Topic, Aeropostale, etc are all popular brands amongst teenagers. Though purchasing clothing as a gift may not go over very well (as she might have something very specific in mind), a gift card to one of her favourite stores will be an appreciated gift. A lot of teenage girls like to shop, especially with gift cards!
