Trunk or Treating

Updated on April 18, 2012

What is Trunk or Treating?

Trunk or treating is relatively new to me still, and learning about it and being a part has been very interesting. Its a great safe alternative for kids to go trick or treating on Halloween or surrounding days, as opposed to walking the streets in random neighborhoods. There are some ups and downs to this, but for the kids it is mostly all very positive and fun!

Trunk or treating is basically setting up your car in a designated area where kids can come and trick or treat from the "trunk" area of your car. Evidently some people really get into the whole idea, and decorate like crazy and some are even going for a contest win! This can be a great way to get the community together in an age where we seem to see less and less community involvement. So in that sense, I love the idea.

I like the idea of being at home, if I am going to give out candy, and this year my involvement in a trunk or treating event will allow time for me to get back home hopefully before dark so I can do that. The "downside" if any, that I can see so far is that I have to buy a lot more candy now, and need to make or buy decorations as well for trunk or treating. I guess you can set up lawn chairs outside of your vehicle while the kids come by. So this is my first time being part of a trunk or treating event.

Churhes and Boys and Girls clubs are getting involved

Many churches, and boys and girls clubs, as well as certain neighborhoods are seeming to get involved in Trunk or Treating.  Even a police station was part of one and the community really responded to that.  There are contests for vehicles and of course for costumes as well.  I have seen adults really get into it, and get dressed up and enjoy themselves.  You can sometimes find ones where there are hotdogs and drinks being served, and I just like the idea of having a safe place to trick or treat for kids.  As always though, people should be very careful and never take their eyes off of the kids they are supervising.  Safety is always of utmost importance.

I would contact your local community center, or just ask around for your local trunk or treat to be a part of.  I think the idea of helping kids to enjoy "being a kid" is a great idea, for time is flying by and they grow up so fast.

Brandon, thank you! I bet your dinosaur costume was awesome, and it sounds like you had a good time with trunk or treating in your area. Thanks for sharing!

I do too, Phoenix. Much safer, and more of a community feel going on all around.

I like trunk or treating as a safe alternative to walking neighborhoods. Our complex does this every year and it is a big hit with the kids. I remember taking my nieces out for Halloween and it was fun. I like your hub and will read more. Teresa
