Upscale Mardi Gras Accessories & Décor
Mardi Gras Creating National Interest
Like any holiday, Mardi Gras offers the chance to gather a plethora of decorations and build your collection of displays. Although the holiday has been more localized, there is a movement to make the celebration a national holiday. Zatarain, a food company that sells Creole-style foods like jambalaya, has been leading that charge. Whether or not they are successful, I think we can count on the holiday becoming more popular at least in the United States due to other cities starting celebrations. Also, many people of the Gulf Coast area were displaced, or chose to move permanently, due to Hurricane Katrina. Likely they will bring this holiday celebration with them and share it with others.

A Need For Quality Décor
A cursory look at the options for décor today typically shows flimsy, gaudy foil-type decorations. It seems that the more outrageous and outlandish, the better. That's the fun of Mardi Gras and it has its place. When Mardi Gras first began to be celebrated in earnest, beautiful invitations and elaborate sterling silver favors were designed and are highly collectible today. Fortunately, there are several companies attempting to get back to the quality of the past for those that need a different look. I was excited to see Toomey's Mardi Gras in Mobile, Alabama, at their booth during Market in Atlanta, which featured their new products. It was designed by a local interior designer. I was impressed the most with their table runners, tableware and enameled frame-style ornaments. Other companies in Louisiana, the epicenter of all things Mardi Gras, are also designing fine Mardi Gras décor. I found many great items, such as lush fleur de lis ribbon, at the link below.

Mardi Gras Items to Permanently Incorporate
A great year round décor idea is to frame a collection of doubloons. Doubloons are fake coins that are minted and every year, on one side, there will be a new theme. You could frame one organization's doubloons with the various yearly themes. Alternately, you could collect different Mardi Gras societies' doubloons with the emblem side (see example). On auction sites, you can even find sterling silver or bronze doubloons to collect and display. Shadow box-style frames can be found in big box craft stores. Typically, the frames include velcro to easily attach doubloons, or anything else. You could also frame antique mystic society invitations or the yearly themed posters each group produces.
In the hunt for quality Mardi Gras décor items, you can't help but think of Carnivale. Carnivale means "farewell to meat" and Mardi Gras shares the same date. Carnivale is celebrated in many places internationally, such as Venice, Trinidad and Rio de Janiero, even Germany. Venetian masks are now available in many Mardi Gras big box stores and are very reasonable. When I'm abroad, I don't buy there, I buy here! Consider buying the masks, either with a stick attached or alone as a mask, to use as focal points for wreaths. Since the holiday is getting more recognition, look for exciting changes in the décor industry in the future and let your upscale décor roll with the good times of Mardi Gras.
