Valentines Day Crafts for Toddlers, Make a Valentines Box!

Updated on August 22, 2011

If you are looking for a good winter craft for kids, may I suggest making a Valentines Box!.I love the look in my little guy's eyes when I start taking out the craft supplies.  He can barely contain himself with an overload of questions about what we are going to make today! Valentines Boxes can be made with a lot of common items! Here are some suggestions on how to make Valentines Day box with your toddler.

DCC Paper Mache Heart Box Set of 3 9 3/4" 8 3/4" 8" 28-0011,

You should start with the basics first. Get yourself a box. Shoe Boxes are best but other boxes can be improvised. Kleenex boxes are a good idea.  My son's preschool is using boxes from Heavenly Ham  that they use for their lunch boxes.   Remember you want to make the box big enough so their Valentines can be slipped easily into it! The box shape may vary. if you want to go for a fancier version of a valentines day box then get one that is in the shape of a heart! Craft stores have a lot of boxes that are in clever shapes, hearts, treasure chests, stars! They are all at a reasonable price! The Paper Mache Heart Shaped Boxes listed to the right come in a set of three and are the right size for your Valentines box!

If you don't have a box but you have some sturdy paper, you may want to make a box out of that!

Making a box

If you don't have a box you might want to make one out of some cardstock or other stiff paper. I also suggest this step might be done before presenting your toddler with the idea of the Valentines Box. Toddlers don't seem to want to wait for anything!!

For your box take your sheet of cardstock.  Draw two diagonal lines, corner to corner making a an X in the paper.

Next turn each corner to the center.

Next tturn over the paper and fold each point back to the original crease made in the first step

Then with Line side up, fold each corner to the first line and make a crease.

Next make small cuts in the adjacent corners of the paper.  Look at diagram for the cuts.  It can be any tow corners as long as they are opposite each other.

Fold the two corners without cuts towards the center

Fold up the edges of the folded paper to form two sides of the box

Fold in the cut ends of the box

Flip over the remaining edges of the box to form the last two parts of the wall.  If your paper is stiff enough it should fit right together with no glue.

Covering the box

The old fashioned way was to cover the box with construction paper! May I recommend covering your box with scrapbook paper? With all the wonderful craft supplies out there it would be shame not to use them on your valentines box. Before covering the lid of he box it is important to cut a slit in the top of the box for the cards to go through!  That way when you cover the top you can make a nice slit in the top f the paper and have it cover the cut edges of the box for a nice clean look. There are many many patterns to choose from in scrapbook paper! The Love Sincere Vintage valentines scrapbook paper comes in a package of 25 double sided sheets . The scrapbook sheet features a valentine design on one side a and a solid color on another side. It is perfect for making a valentines box or any other valentines craft!

Decorate your box!

After covering your box with some very pretty scrapbook paper the next step is to decorate it! We used to cut out hearts from construction paper and glue it on the box. Now you can buy all sorts of stickers and appliques to place on the box! There are shiny sticker, puffy stickers and foam stickers. The Memory Keepers Embossible designs stickers give a 3 -D feel to your Valentine Box. Included are stickers of hearts, angels and some kisses! The Foam heart Stickers come in many sizes and patterns. These hearts are not just pink and red! They come in a variety of plaids and stripes! These hearts come in a package of 90!

Additional decorating

Nothing get my son more excited than the use of glitter glue! These pens have a "stay fresh" seal so that you will not have to worry about the glitter glue drying up!  The one thing you do have to worry about it is where your toddler will put it!  Dress appropriately!
