The Best Music for Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day Music and Songs
What would Valentine's Day be without some romantic music or songs?
If you're planning an intimate, just for two, Valentine's celebration, there is nothing more sensual than having the right music playing in the background. Everyone has their favourites, of course, but here are eleven that I have gathered together which hopefully will inspire your inner lover.
If they do, then grab that box of chocolates, make sure there is a glass of wine (or two) close at hand, slip into something more comfortable, take your lover by the hand...and as Jim Morrison once said, "C'mon baby, light my fire!"
Over to you.
Everything I Do (I Do It For You)
This song holds a very special place in my life and has the perfect lyrics for Valentine's Day.
From Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, let Bryan Adams steal your heart with Everything I Do (I Do It For You).
Let's Get It On
Quite possibly the granddaddy of all love songs for the romantic-at-heart the world over. If this one wasn't included here, I know I wouldn't be doing my job properly!
Here's Marvin Gaye with a plea to Let's Get It On.
You Make Me Feel Brand New
Some old school soul from one of the most popular Philly groups of the 1970s. I remember this one being the song of choice as the first dance for my brother and his new wife at their wedding. Still sounds smooth today.
I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby
If it wasn't for the songs Barry White, there probably wouldn't be quite so many 40 and 30-somethings around today ;)
This is his first big hit record which just oozes l-u-r-v-e, passion and romance.
Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin
Je t'aime...moi non plus
They say that French is the language of lovers. Well, they weren't lying when it comes to this song.
Originally written for and recorded with his lover, the French actress Brigitte Bardot, Serge Gainsbourg later fell for the English actress, Jane Birkin. They get it together on this track from 1969, which had them banned from radio play in several countries around Europe. That didn't do them any harm though, as people bought the record to see what the fuss was all about - and subsequently sent it to #1.
The Righteous Brothers
If your Valentine's Day plans ever include sensually moulding some very wet clay into something indescribable, then this is the song for you.
A tune you can get very messy to: Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers. Well, one of them anyway. I think the other one was cranking up his potter's wheel.
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
If you've ever seen the movie Play Misty For Me with Clint Eastwood, you'll know that this song is included on the soundtrack. Judging by his infatuated wannabe lover, Eastwood probably wished he'd never set eyes on her face!
However, this has got to be one of THE most romantic songs ever written and should be on your playlist for Valentine's Day or any time you are in a romantic mood.
The Power of Love
Many people associate this song with Celine Dion, but here's the lady who recorded it first back in 1985. Jennifer Rush was fortunate to have the best selling single in the UK that year with The Power of Love.
She seemed to drop off the face of the Earth after this. However, she matches Ms. Dion in vocal ability, and I much prefer this version anyway!
Kiss You All Over
Just a great song for Valentine's Day - but be careful, if you abide by the lyrics you might not have any strength left for anything else...
Softly Whispering I Love You
A long forgotten gem from the early 1970s which was updated by Paul Young some time ago. Somehow, you just can't beat the original, but Paul does a great job with the song, too.
Written by one of the kings of the romantic lyric, Lionel Ritchie.
Thankfully, Kenny Rogers forgets his country roots for a few minutes to deliver an impressively soulful vocal on this number called Lady.
