Valentines Day with Just a Few Pennies

Updated on February 10, 2011

Valentines day is a wonderful celebration of love. However, sometimes the pennies do not always permit us to go all out with it. You don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy your valentines day, there are some wonderful, romantic things you could do on a shoestring.

Recreate the hotel environment

You could recreate the hotel environment by getting some cheap sparkling wine. Pick some roses from a park and spread them all over the bed and floor. Candles are always a great addition to any valentines day setting. Set the bubble bath with some scented oils and you have the perfect valentines day setting. Music is always necessary, play your favourite slow jams and slip into something soft and slinky.

Throw together a cheap meal

Nice does not always have to be expensive. You can make a perfect meal on a shoestring budget. Here are some ideas

- Chicken or vegetable fajitas with salad

- Lasagne with salad or vegetables

- Penne carbonara with crusty

- Chicken, aromatic rice and salad or vegetables

- Stuffed red peppers (rice and spices)

- Simple chicken salad with crusty bread

- Chicken or vegetable soup with crusty bread

You don’t have to have a dessert but if you want one it is best to go with something very light like a fruit salad. Strawberries and cream or peaches and cream always works well.

Alternatives to champagne

You don’t have to get champagne you can go for an alternative such as:

Asti- Asti is the made in Italy in a place called Piedmont. It is a pretty sweet sparkling wine and would be great for picnic alternative to the traditional champagne. It is pretty cheap as well so it won’t break the bank.

Prosecco- This is Italian sparkling wine, cheaper than champagne but is perfect for people who prefer a dry wine. This one does not have the sweetness of Asti.

Cava- Cava is Spanish champagne, it is their version of the traditional sparkling wine. You can get sweet Cava but it is usually dry. It is also cheaper than champagne, although you can more expensive versions of it.

Go on a picnic

If it is pretty hot where you live, picnics are perfect valentines day treats. They don’t cost the earth either, unless you want to go all out with it. All you need is a hamper, a blanket and some nibbles. Salmon and cucumber sandwiches, breadsticks with dip such as, hummous, guacamole and red pepper hummous work well. Crusty bread and potato wedges with a variety of dips also work well. You could also consider chicken wings or chicken bites with dips.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on flowers, you could pick some from the park, or even your back yard. You don’t always have to go for roses either. Daisies are perfect for an afternoon picnic.

With Valentines day it really is the thought that counts. A hand made card will mean more than a store bought one. Consider framing a picture of you and your partner in a nice frame. You could make a key ring with a picture of the two of you, or just a picture of yourself. They cost a couple of dollars to make. Also buy a cheap t shirt and print a message on it. If you are good with words why not consider handwriting a beautiful poem on some cartridge paper. You could simply send it in a text message. Make a forever love bracelet out of thread in the same way that you would make a friendship bracelet.

So, you see you don’t have to spend a fortune when it comes to Valentines day. You can still have a good time without breaking the bank.
