How Much Money Do I Put In A Child's Birthday Card?

Let's say your child is invited to a birthday. You are short on time and want to give the birthday child money or a gift card so they can pick out their own present. Calculate your budget on birthday presents for the year. Figure out how much you would spend based on the estimate of children's birthdays you will give money to. For me the estimate was around, $20.00.

What is Your Average?

On average, how much do spend total on birthday presents for a year?

Feeling Guilty of Not Being Able To Give More

Some people feel pressure to give more than they can for presents. Perhaps a friend gave you an exquisit gift for your birthday and you feel like you want to reciprocate the present. However, you can not afford it. For some, they may live in a family were it is expected to give an expensive gift regardless if you can afford it or not.

It is important to remember:

You are the gift.

You are enough, and just being you offering a tresure in your budget is enough. No one should make you feel guilty for what you can not give. That is their issue surrounding gifts. Let it go and know you are giving what you can, and that is significant.

How Much Money Should I Put in A Birthday Card

Money is the one gift that is rarely returned. Everyone appreciates cash, although some may think giving money is impersonal. Instead of money you can always offer a gift card. The same question applies, how much money should I put on a gift card?

The answer may vary for each person's budget and for the recipient.

A financial advisor would advise you to purchase presents within your budget. They would ask you to write out the name the people you would typically purchase a gift for. Include family, friends and projected birthday parties for your kids.

For me the family would include; my husband, daughter, son, sister, brother, two nieces, mother-in-law, father-in-law, and an aunt. Ten family members.

Next, sketch out a rough estimate on the amount of birthday presents you would spend. Do not forget your children's friends and all the birthdays they are invited to. Let's say my son averages 5 birthdays a year, as well as my daughter. Also, I have 3 good friends I will buy for. Thirteen presents for friends.

10 + 13 = 23 presents. If I only spend $10 on a gift for each person that would be $230.00 for the year. However, I typically spend more on my family and friends.

Most likely I would spend $100 for each of my children including any party's for them. I would probably spend $60 on a present for my husband, and sister. Additional family members average $30.00 including shipping.

100 (son's present) + 100 (daughter's present) + 60 (husband's present) + 60 (sister's present) + 30 x 6 (rest of the family) = $500 for birthday presents for my family

For my 3 good friends I would also spend around $30.00. The total will be $90.

So far I spend $590 dollars for presents for close family members and friends.

Now let's add in additional birthdays like when your children are invited to birthday parties, and babysitters, or neighbors.

Originally I estimated $10 for birthday presents for children's birthdays my kids are invited too. If I just spend $10 on each present it would total $100.00 a year. However, I have never been able to only spend $10, I usually try to spend under $20.00 for a child's birthday present. That ends up being $200.00 a year.

So in this scenario, I spend close to $800 dollars on presents a year! And this does not even include Holiday presents.

So, back to the original question, how much money should you put in a birthday card? For me it depends on if it is a family member, a close friend, or a friend. I will not put more than $20.00 in a card based on my budget.

How much do you spend?

Excellent post on writing inside Birthday Cards. Your charts are so helpful. I often make my own and having this list of options is very useful. I loved the Muppet Birthday song -- very jazzy!

This is great! I love the ideas! I used to spend a lot less money on birthdays - then I had my grandkids! By the middle of July I'll have 5!! That's a lot of birthdays - and a lot of cards to write!

This hub is perfect for me! I totally suck at writing birthday cards, but I also hate buying pre-made ones because they're either too mushy or too mean. Voted up++
