A Christmas Carol: the Musical-Great Family Christmas Gift

Updated on February 27, 2013

Scrooge Musical

Need a family gift idea? Many people are looking for Christmas gift ideas for families. How about a family holiday movie? It's a great way to gather everyone into one place and celebrate the spirit of the holidays.

A few years back I discovered this delightful family movie from Hallmark. The story of A Christmas Carol has been around for many years with many different variations filmed. What I love about this one is that it's a musical.

Scrooge from A Christmas Carol - Actor Kelsey Grammer

The main character in A Christmas Carol is Ebenezer Scrooge, a wealthy, but stingy man. The character was created by Charles Dickens and the story originally published in 1843.

In an effort to save his soul, he is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve. One from his past, one from his present and one from his future.

In the musical version, the role of Scrooge is portrayed by Kelsey Grammer who is best known for his role as Frasier Crane on Cheers.

Scrooge Christmas Carol - Actor Jason Alexander

Another memorable actor in A Christmas Carol: the Musical is Jason Alexander whom most people will recognize from the hit series Frasier.

He does an incredible job of portraying the character of Jacob Marley. Check out the video below for a scene with Kelsey Grammer and Jason Alexander which includes the song Link by Link.

So what makes this such a great family gift? The movie was produced by Hallmark, which has quite a reputation for quality family movies.

The cast and performances are great. Other major roles are portrayed by such actors as Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jesse L. Martin and Geraldine Chaplin.

Whether it be kids, parents or grandparents, there's something about this movie that has an appeal to all age groups.

Most of all though, it's the music. The movie is filled with wonderful music from Alan Menken with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. Each year my family and I gather up in the family room on Christmas Eve, light a fire, make some hot chocolate and watch this movie. Days later, my kids are still singing the tunes.

It's a wonderful way to spend family time together during the holidays, while getting a chance to relax and be entertained. Christmas wouldn't be the same in my house without it.

Also, being that it's a musical, it's not as "dark" as some of the other versions of the movie.

An easy way to get a copy of this movie is through Amazon which currently has it for a great price. You might even pick up a copy for yourself! Where I live, the local schools have gift drives during the holidays to give presents to families that can't otherwise afford gifts. These would make great family gifts for these families.

I love the more modern versions of "A Christmas Carol" ... although the original was a fascinating presentation! What a delightful Christmas gift.

I played the Ghost of Christmas Present in a school play once so that was my favorite version lol but ok, you mean the professional version, I'd have to say the original and also The Scrooge Christmas Carol with Jason Alexander.
