Hosting A Great Alphabet Party

Have you heard about alphabet parties? The main idea behind an alphabet party is a fancy dress theme that starts with a certain letter of the alphabet.

Choose a letter and everyone has to come dressed as something beginning with that letter in other words. When I was younger we used to attend a lot of alphabet parties that were basically a themed fancy dress party and they were fantastic, but there's ways to take your party to a whole new level.

So how can you make sure your event stands out from the crowd and is talked about for weeks, no months, no years later? Well let's take your ABCs beyond a mere fancy dress event and combine food, drink and d├ęcor all around your letter of choice. That's what I did and people are still talking about the great night (of course we had great company which is always the key to a good party) we all had. Let me share some tips with you for throwing the perfect alphabet party ever!

Alphabet Party Checklist

  1. Choose your letter. There's 26 letters in the alphabet for you to choose from, although some will be harder than others to find costumes for.
  2. Decide what type of party you want - for example beer & wine on offer, cocktails as well as a sit down meal versus finger food.
  3. Write your invitation list - and then, obviously, send out the invites.
  4. Decide on your menu and organize your drinks.
  5. Organize your party decor.
  6. Don't forget the ice! I have a friend who always forgets the ice so we ring just before we leave home to see if he needs anything....can you grab some ice is always the reply!!
  7. Have a good time.

Choosing Your Letter

Alphabet Costume Ideas

If you want ideas for what to dress up as for an alphabet party before you decide on a letter then check out the ideas they have on this A-Z costumes webpage. You can also offer a few hints to your guests if they look totally blank about ideas :D These are just a few ideas, I'm always amazed at how some guests will think outside of the box and come up with some fantastic costume ideas.

Party Invitations

Now I'll admit texting and emails are how I've organized my last few parties, but I'll admit I do love to receive a party invitation through the mail. If you want to send an invitation then this one can be customized to whatever letter you've chosen.

This Celtic Design Letter Z invitation (pictured opposite) is available through Zazzle and can be changed to whatever letter you want and ordered in the quantity you require from 1 to 1 million!

You can use any type of invitation you like I just love the idea of using your letter of choice in the invitation, but then I do sometimes go overboard on an idea according to those close to me!

Alphabet Cocktail Ideas

Organizing Party Drinks

If you've decided on a cocktail party, then what about choosing cocktails that begin with the letter you've chosen. For example you could serve Pina Coladas for a 'P' party, Martinis for a 'M' party or Appletinis for an 'A' party.

There's lots more of cocktail ideas to choose from and the people at Dream Cocktails have been nice enough to put some of their great cocktails on a page simply called ABC of cocktails, which as the name suggests displays cocktails in alphabetical order!

Party Food Ideas

It's always a great idea to offer food if your guests are drinking whether it's a meal or just finger food. Personally I usually offer finger food, but at a recent 'M' party I went for Mexican. I said to hubby, 'M is for Mexican, let's make a chili.'

We made a big pot of chili, chopped up lettuce and tomatoes, grated cheese, offered guacomale and sour cream and had a selection of hard nacho shells and tortilla wraps. Everyone served themselves. It was so easy to organize and yet people have been talking about it for ages!

When making finger foods you could try foods made with the letter of choice or you could make food in the shape of a particular letter..........I haven't taken things this far before, but some of my popular finger foods include caramelized onion and goats cheese tarts which could easily be made into different shapes.

Alphabet Caramelized Onion and Goats Cheese Tarts Recipe

This is a really easy recipe to make, first defrost some frozen pastry sheets and then caramelize some onions (I add sugar to the onion to speed up the caramelizing process).

Preheat oven to 180C.

Cut the pastry into the appropriate letter, spread a little of the caramelized onion onto the letter and top with some soft goats cheese, use egg wash around the edges and pop into the oven until the pastry is golden in color.

I haven't added in actual amounts because it depends on how many you want to make and it's a little finger food that I just make without thinking about, but you could adapt a lot of recipes that use pastry.

Alphabet Party Decor

When you've chosen your letter you'll want it to be evident in the party decor, one way is by using silver glitter letters like the one pictured which are available to buy in the letter of choice.

Of course you can always harness your inner school child to make paper chains with the appropriate letter to hang around the room.

Another fun way is to write the letter on a number of different balloons and hang them up.

As you can see from these alphabet embellishments you can also make letter cutouts in chipboard and decorate yourself (or buy these and just use the particular letter you want). Simply spray on a silver paint background and then add silver glitter - gorgeous disco-inspired letter decor!

Alphabet Wall Decals

Wall decals are really popular these days and it's also a great way of decorating for a party, these designs are available in all the different letters of the alphabet -

Don't Forget The Ice!

Frozen Alphabet Letters

Now if you want to really impress and you're very organized you can make your own alphabet ice. I love the idea, but I must admit I wouldn't be organized enough to make plenty of one particular letter before the party even began.

I have never hosted an alphabet party but I have been to one. It was a P party and we had to come dressed as something starting with P. My date owned 2 flags, so we wrapped ourselves in these flags, painted the flags on our faces and everyone was thinking Presidents & Prime minister. But no one ever guessed that we were both PATRIOTS. We won first prize!!! The ONLY time I have ever won any costume party!!
