      Samhain is an ancient Celtic tradition and is followed in the UK. the old festival, children would receive apples as a treat, if no treat was forthcomig, the trick was pelting with stale vegetables. Dressing up is a much later introduction

   i think it's because it is so fun and it's for adults as well as kids. we go to an adult halloween party every year and we also go to a family one. the candy is a bonus too.

   Parties, candy and costumes!  What other holiday do you get to do all of these things?  You get to be scary!  Every other holiday is about smiles and hugs this one is about screams and scary stories.

   It's fun to be scared, thrilled and play dress-up! Candy is for the kids, who we're training to love all of those things as much as we do.

    I don't know, but when I lived in the Middle East a worker from Yemen saw all the Halloween hoopla on our American compound and asked us if it was Christmas?!  He only knew it was some American holiday.
