It there a certain plant or animal who's appearance best signals the approach of spring for you?
I really enjoy seeing daffodils spring up in London during March and hearing birdsong more intensly during the evenings and mornings. The most prominent sign is that the darkness subsides and evenings are longer. I can't wait for Spring to arrive!
I love the lengthening of the days. I really hate getting up in the dark.
For the beginning or very early spring here in Scotland, it's the snowdrops and crocus - we don't usually get the beautiful daffodils for a few weeks yet, but they are also a sign that spring is definately here!
Later in the spring it tends to be for me the new born lambs - it's great to see these wee cuties running about over the fields.!
The robin! I remember as a young child my father pointing out the first robin sighting of spring and announce that spring has come. Living in New York, the Robin is a creature to be envious of, migrating to the south for the cold, dark winter season and returning in the spring once the living conditions are back to acceptable. The first robin sighting of the season brings a sigh of relief.
I saw the first robin in my yard last week, I'm afraid he's a bit chilly now though.
Sherry,
I have been counting down the days until March; the "ugly" month, with brown dirty snow and one season trying to leave while another makes way. I had been looking foward to warmth and sunshine and we have had a frigid week with snow. argh!
In my country, Bulgaria, the snowdrop is known as "The spring harbinger"
They are such beautiful hardy little flowers.
I love the natural succession of plants and flowers when Spring comes round the corner.
But I see the snowdrop as a deceiver! It's a pretty wee thing but it can start shooting up in the coldest weather! Daffodils are great and I can see them bursting through the earth now, but there's a chill in the wind!
When Jack by the Hedge starts to grow I know the warmer weather is here and Spring has wiped its feet and is in the door! Jack by the Hedge is a thin green plant about knee high that loves hedgerows and wood sides. It has tiny white flowers and lovely shaped leaves and smells of garlic when rubbed.
Thanks for those vivid descriptions. The daffodils here often get snowed on, but at least their appearance tells us spring is coming.
My cats shedding all over the house signals spring to me. ;-)
Not as picturesque as some of the answers, but a harbinger of spring nonetheless
Initially, I thought spring was showing its face when my tulips started erupting through the ground, but then we were greeted by two snowstorms and they are now quite buried still under snow. The sounds of happy birds early in the morning is usually the best tip that spring is finally approaching. And when spring is here and we have a cloudy rainy day, I usually tell some friends, sometimes you have to be your own sun. For now, listen for the birds and watch lawns turn green again.
I love the new grass. I'm afraid my tulips never make it, they're always a little ahead of the season.

What is your favorite early sign of Spring? What do you look forward to the most every winter when Spring is about to occur: the return of certain birds? Plants peeping through the soil? Walking barefoot in the grass? Shelving your winter coat and breaking out your summer clothes?
