Was it intended to get over the shock of the resurrection? Sorry, couldn't help it!
There used to be eight days of celebration, the period was known as the Octave of Easter and was calculated depending on the March Equinox. For a long time (in Australia anyway) we had the Tuesday off also, this stopped about three decades ago. Holidays aside, it's interesting to see the period is aligned to the Equinox, just as Christmas aligns more to the Solstice. These are Pagan traditions which were adopted by the church.
