I write from South India. Even though we have joined the global bandwagon of celebrating new year on Jan 1st, our traditional New Year comes only on April 14. In Tamil culture, there is one preparation -- very meaningful -- that is taken on that day. It is a soup made out of Jaggary (sweet), salt, tamarind (sour), chilly (hot), neem flowers (bitter).
It is a way of reminding you that whatever be your aspirations for new year, life will come with its own varying tastes (good, bad, bitter....).
