It depends on who the person is as an individual that you are trying to get something for. Do you know the person well? What are their likes, dislikes, and interests? Do they have a hobby or job you know something about? For example, if the person is an artist, you might purchase some supplies according to the medium in which they work. Are they the type of person who would rather have a diamond necklace, some golf clubs, or a potholder you made - simply because you made it? How sentimental are they? I don't think there is just one overall best Christmas gift. There are items which may be very popular right now. Any salesperson could help you with this. Personally, I know I appreciate something a person has spent time thinking about or even making for me. Otherwise, with no knowledge of the person, I vote gift card. Most retailers have gift cards, even the restaurants. And if all else fails, as a last resort, give 'em cash.
