I dislike them.
I also dislike the long, rambling Christmas letter detailing every accomplishment (dear Lord, the detail) and omitting every failure.
I think the two above Christmas correspondences are self-centered. A little picture of your children tucked into a card sent to people who are close but perhaps don't see the children often is certainly thoughtful. The entirety of the card being a picture of yourself and/or your family is tiresome. It is like advertising.
How about a nice "Dear Aunt Gladys, It has been far too long since we have spoken. I am thinking of that wonderful summer at your home (your wonderful holiday pies, etc). We hope this holiday season finds you happy and health and wish for you..."
Focus on the "thinking of you, hoping for you, remembering you..." as opposed to "look at me, , let me tell you about our new pool, look at my new house, see me me me".
Of course, Facebook drives me nuts as well. Could be me, I recognize this.
