Avengers Assemble Halloween costumes

Avengers costumes for Halloween

The Avengers have been a movie phenomenon since the release of 'Iron Man' in 2008. Regularly topping the box office charts around the world, 'The Avengers' franchise has spawned numerous movies (Iron Man I, II and III, The Incredible Hulk, three Thor movies, three Captain America movies and numerous Avengers films) with several more in various stages of production and planning, and the films are currently the highest grossing film franchise of all time recently overtaking Harry Potter and James Bond.

So why dress up as an Avenger this Halloween?

Wondering why you should dress up as an Avenger this Halloween? There are two good reasons I can think of. Firstly, The Avengers are cool. It's great to dress up as a superhero and Halloween gives you a perfect excuse to run around pretending to destroy things with your magical hammer or blast lasers out of the palms of your hands.

Secondly, The Avengers make a fantastic group Halloween costume. Get a group of friends together, decide who's going to be who (draw straws if you have to) and go out and get those costumes.

Iron Man

'Iron Man' was the first film to be released in the franchise, back in 2008 and has since been followed up by two sequels in 2010 and 2013.

The story focusses on Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr), a multi-billionaire playboy, industrialist and engineering genius, and owner of 'Stark Industries', a defence contractor inherited from his father. Originally building an armour suit to escape from Afghan terrorists, Stark builds an improved version upon his return to the US and becomes 'Iron Man'.

As well as giving him super human strength and resistance to damage, the Iron Man suit also gives Stark the ability to fly and shoot lasers from the palms of his hands among other things.

The Incredible Hulk

'The Incredible Hulk' was the second film in the Marvel franchise, and was also released in 2008. Creating a new back story after the poorly received 'Hulk' of 2003, this film was a much bigger success with generally better reviews.

In 'The Incredible Hulk', Dr. Bruce Banner is on the run from the US government having been an unwitting pawn in the US military's efforts to create a super soldier using gamma radiation.

Most of the time Banner is a quiet, reserved, human scientist, but when angered or placed under great stress, he becomes the Hulk, an near-invincible green giant with super human strength.

You can find some pretty cool Hulk costume items on Amazon including masks and Hulk gloves that make smashing sounds when you hit things.

Hulk is probably the easiest Avenger to make your own costume of though. Just cover yourself in green body paint, rip up an old shirt and pair of trousers and you're ready to go.

Thor

'Thor' was released in 2011, starring Chris Hemsworth as the Norse god of the title and directed by Kenneth Branagh. The plot revolves around Thor, the crown prince of Asgard, who is banished to Earth by his father Odin after starting a battle with the ice giants against Odin's orders. Stripped of his godly powers and his magic hammer, Mjolinr, Thor must battle his evil adopted brother Loki and protect his new found Earth friends.

Captain America

Captain America: The First Avenger was released in 2011 starring Chris Evans as the title character. Set during World War II, Captain America tells the story of Steve Rogers, a weak sickly man from New York who is selected to be part of a medical procedure to create a super soldier to aid the war effort. Rogers strength, endurance, speed, reflexes and healing are all increased to the peak of human ability. This along with his near-indestructible shield, makes Rogers Captain America, the First Avenger.

More Avenger costumes

Black Widow, Nick Fury and Hawkeye also make great Halloween costumes and aren't too difficult to make up yourself.

Failing that, alternatives can be found quite cheaply on Amazon for these heroes and more.
