Tell Them the REAL Easter Story!

If you're a Christian parent, guardian or Sunday School teacher frustrated by the Easter bunny and Easter egg revolution that seems to be taking place and crowding out the real meaning of Easter, then you've come to the right place.

Easter eggs and bunnies are not bad in themselves but it is important that as Christian parents, teachers and guardians we provide the children in our charge with sound knowledge about this "feast of all feasts" (Catechism of the Catholic Church) and help them accurately relate it to their Christian faith.

So in this article, I will be sharing with you some of the best Easter resources and activities for children, aside from the Holy Bible of course, which focus on the real meaning of Easter from a Christian perspective.

Parents, guardians and teachers can fill in other pertinent details, as necessary, based on the child or children's questioning and ages.

BIBLE-based Easter Story Books

BIBLE-based Easter Story Books

WHY? As we all know by now, that is the favourite word and question for children 2 years and up. So I have selected the following three (3) bible-based Easter story books that are easy reading and contain beautiful illustrations in order to help parents, guardians and teachers explain to children the true Christian meaning of Easter

1. The Easter Story Board book

This is a simple book with beautiful illustrations that effectively helps children understand the true Christian meaning of Easter.

The language and form of storytelling in this book is appropriate for children between the ages of 2 and 5 years old. It provides the children with a good amount of background information about Jesus, his earthly life and ministry and the events leading up to Easter.

2. The Week That Led to Easter - Arch Books Paperback

This book is appropriate for older children. That is, children between the ages of 5 and 8 years old.

It does not go as far back as the previous two (2) books into Jesus’ life. However, it uses the Holy Bible as a base to accurately tell a simpler version of all of the happenings during Holy Week right up to Easter.

3. An Easter Gift for Me Board book

The cover of this book may be a bit misleading with the Easter chick and eggs but this book takes a very Christian approach to the Easter story, covering some of Jesus’ earthly ministry before touching on Easter.

Similar to the previous book – ‘The Easter Story’ - this book is also targeted to children between the ages of 2 to 5 years. There are beautiful illustrations by Claudine Gévry that will certainly hold your little one’s attention.

BIBLE-based Easter Games & Trivia

How to Use Games to Reinforce the Easter Message

Using appropriately themed Christian Easter activities is also important to help parents, guardians and teachers reinforce the true message of Easter to the children in their care in ways that make learning about Easter and Jesus Christ fun. Playing games and trivia, like those I will outline shortly, are a wonderful and effective way of doing this.

Printable Christian Easter Trivia Game

This easily downloadable and printable Easter Trivia Game can be used by families at home, in weekday school activities or at Sunday School.

One of the fun ways that this Easter Trivia can be used is:

  • Playing for points, stickers or edible goodies based on the highest amount of correct answers to the Trivia. This can be an individual exercise or the children (or family members) can be placed in competing teams.

CHRISTIAN Easter Movie, DVD & Music Resources

Celebrating Easter with Movies & Music!

Children love watching television/movies and listening to joyous music! So allowing them to watch a bible-based movie/DVD of the Easter story or listen to Christian Easter music is yet another fun-based way of reinforcing the true Christian Easter message. I have selected the following two (2) resources which you would love:

1. The Greatest Adventure Stories From the Bible: The Easter Story (2006)

This animated movie/DVD version of the Easter story is based on the gospel of Mark’s version of Easter in the Holy Bible and can be watched by the entire family.

It begins with the scene of people welcoming Jesus into Jerusalem with palm branches and faithfully recounts the activities leading up to the Resurrection of Jesus.

2. Let's Celebrate! Favorite Easter Songs for Families

This MP3 album contains 14 Easter-themed songs featuring children singing. The whole album can be bought and downloaded or individual songs on the album can be bought to do your own mix and match Easter music CD.

This is a great resource that can be used in a multitude of ways including the following:

  1. Play it while travelling with children in a vehicle.
  2. Play it at home during the Easter season as good background listening music to bring a nice Christian Easter mood to your home..
  3. Teach children the Easter songs in a choir, Sunday School class, regular class, at home or for an Easter concert or play.

CHRISTIAN ART & CRAFT Easter Resources

Christian Stationery, Stickers & Coloring Books

Other activities that children love are painting, drawing and coloring, particularly because these activities allow them to put their own spin on things, express their unique creativity and show how their little minds have captured and interpreted what has been told to them or what they have heard.

So I will share four (4) fun resources that children would love at home, Sunday School, regular school or at an Easter sleep over:

1. "He Lives" Make A Scene Stickers

So you can use these religious Easter stickers as a base resource for the children. Have them draw, paint and/or colour the Easter story and do their own unique arrangement of the
14 stickers which depict:

the empty tomb, the rolled away stone that covered the tomb entrance,

Jesus, Mary, an Angel, a dove, 3 crosses, the sun and ferns/flowers.

2. He Lives! Sticker Sheets - Stationery & Stickers

Here are a different set of religious Easter stickers that can be used in pretty much the same way as illustrated in the example above or be placed in special Easter baskets for children as Sunday School or Easter party favors.

3. 12 Paper "He Lives!" Easter Story Coloring Books

This is a set of 12 Christian-themed coloring books depicting various bible scenes from the Easter story. Each coloring book contains 12 pages and is a great activity for children from between the ages of 3 and 6 years.

4. Lot of 48 Plastic Bright Color Crystal Cross Necklaces Religious Party Favors

Finally, you can use these brightly colored crosses to keep the Easter message alive and relevant in a number of ways including:

  1. As prizes for a Sunday School Easter activity; like the Easter games and trivia that I mentioned earlier.
  2. As part of a gift set or gift basket for your child/children’s friends whom you may be inviting over for Easter.
  3. Just as an Easter keepsake or gift for your child/children during the Easter season and beyond.
