Best Gifts for a 4 Year Old Boy
Best Christmas Gifts for Four Year Old Boys
A single friend of mine who has no children asked me what would be the best gift for a 4 year old boy. Well, although it's been a while since my own son was four, I have another friend who has a 4 year old boy, and I've spent a lot of time looking for suitable gifts. I like to try and find gifts that engage, and preferably educate - or help development in some way... and of course, that don't annoy his parents! ;) I also like to get something a little different and interesting if possible.
The friend who asked me for ideas for gifts for a 4 year old boy said he specifically wanted non-electronic and non-plastic gifts, with a preference for educational-but-fun. So, I have catered mainly for those specifications here. :)
I've shared on this page, all the best gifts I've found - and I've featured what I believe is the very best gift for a four-year-old boy. Girls will love it too, but I have first-hand knowledge of a boy receiving, it since I gave it to my friend's son - and he absolutely LOVED it!
Nature Gifts for a 4 Year Old Boy
Kid's Vegetable Growing Kit
One of my favorite gift ideas for children of all ages is a gardening kit - particularly vegetable and fruit growing kits. Apart from being fun, interesting and educational, kids are more likely to eat fruit and vegetables they've grown themselves - which means the beginning of healthy eating habits! ;) This gift is so much more than just a fun activity. For a 4 year old boy, it teaches caring, responsibility, healthy eating, respect for the environment, and a closeness with - and fascination for - nature.
This kit contains seed packs for various vegetables, trays, pots, coconut coir disk, and germination bags. The seedlings will need to be transplanted once they've reached a certain stage, so this gift is for a child with a garden. The plants are quick to sprout, and are easy to care for. A fun and engaging gift for a four year old "budding gardener" ;)
This indoor growing kit comes with seeds for cherry tomatoes, sweet peppers and strawberries - all hardy plants that are good survivors. The kit contains everything needed to get started right away, and your favorite four year old can grow his plants indoors (in bright light) or outdoors - which makes this a good one for kids who don't have access to a garden for transplanting. The fruit is small but tasty, and is ready to pick and eat within a few months of the seeds sprouting.
The Best Gift I've Found for a 4 Year Old Boy - Butterfly Garden
This is my all-time favorite gift for a four year old boy! it's a great gift for girls as well of course, and for other ages, but I gave this to my friend's 4 year old boy, and he absolutely loved it! It's absorbing, interesting and educational - and fun! There is a voucher in the box with the Butterfly Garden, for 5 caterpillars which you order online, and receive through the mail when you're ready for them. When I received the Butterfly Garden, I opened the box carefully and removed the voucher, and placed the order for the caterpillars so that they would arrive in time for him to receive with the garden itself. Instead of this, you can wrap the box and give it to the child, and then let his parents order the caterpillars - but this means he'll need to wait until they arrive in the mail before he can get started with the butterfly garden.
The birthday boy's mother said he was beside himself with excitement - and loved watching the caterpillars grow each day.
Another great thing about this gift is, you can re-use it! More caterpillars can be ordered online, and of course you can repeat the experience as many times as you like!
The Live Butterfly Garden on Video...
If you're giving one of these live insect gifts, you could add a large magnifying glass to the parcel! :)

Science Kit Gifts for 4 Year Old Boys
My First Science Kit - The Science of Color
Featuring 10 science experiments, including growing crystals in 24 different hues and capturing a rainbow in a tube, this award-winning science kit is very popular with 4 year olds - both boys and girls! The color dyes wash out easily and are non-toxic, making it easy to clean up after experiments. A wonderful gift to get your favorite four year old boy excited about science!
This fabulous and fascinating stuff can provide hours of fun - especially for kids who don't often see snow! Mix the powder with water, and it absorbs the water, fluffing up to look like real snow! This tub is enough to make around two gallons of "snow" and the great bonus is: it comes with an activity guide which explains the science behind the "erupting snow"! It is, of course, non-toxic.
Puzzles for 4 Year Old Boys
48 Piece Dinosaur Floor Puzzle
A great gift for a 4 year old boy - these dinosaurs are so beautifully illustrated, and being a 48 piece puzzle, it's a perfect balance between challenging and achievable! The picture is excellent for capturing a four year old boy's imagination, and for inspiring him to complete the puzzle. 48 pieces is a good challenge for most 4 year olds.
Excellent quality, these puzzle pieces are built to last. They're strong and sturdy without the "bendiness" of some lesser quality puzzles. They're also easy to wipe clean. The image is bright and colorful, and of course this is perfect for a 4 year old boy who has shown an interest in the planets (and in my experience most 4 year old boys are interested in the planets! ;) )
Educational Games for 4 Year Old Boys
Sum Swamp Addition and Subtraction Game
Making math an adventure, this is a brilliant game for 4 year old boys. The game involves a journey through a swamp, through adding and subtracting the numbers on the dice. There are variations, including the Crocodile Short Cut and the Endless Loop.
Sum Swamp is designed to develop and sharpen beginner math skills and is a game that children can grow with, which means the interest and fun will last several years - it also means it's fun for older siblings and parents.
A highly popular educational variation on Bingo, Zingo teaches vocabulary and image recognition, memory, concentration and develops memory, as well as social interaction. It's an engaging game with two levels of play, so it's fun for siblings of different ages and parents, as well as lasting a good few years for a child receiving it at 4 years old! Addictive and fun exercising for the brain! :)
A fun way for kids to learn to play with cards - how to deal, how to hold them, taking turns and reading numbers. The illustrations are bright and fun, and the game is recommended for a wide age range (36 months to 9 years) so, not only will it last a good few years with one child, but it means it's also suitable and fun for siblings of different ages!
This award-winning educational game involves players working together to help the owls fly back to their nest before sunrise. A great one for helping develop team work and social development skills, as well as problem solving, following directions and simple strategy. There's no reading needed, and the game is suitable for all ages from 4 years upwards. A good family game.
A fun game for for 4 year old boys, this one involves "flipping" frogs into a pond to collect the most pieces. It's fun for different ages to play together, and there are two levels of play: The basic game, aimed at ages 4 to 6, and the math challange game for ages 6 to 8. Parents have fun with this one as well!
Sequence for Kids
An excellent game for 4 year old boys, Sequence is also popular with other ages (and girls) - in fact many families enjoy playing this one together. It's the sort of game that is fun and achievable for a four year old, but is still also fun and challenging for older players.
The game involves playing cards from your hand, and placing a chip on the corresponding characters on the board. When a player has four in a row, it's a "sequence" and that player wins. However... there is more to it, which is why it's such fun: When you play a Unicorn card, you can place your chip anywhere... and playing a Dragon card allows you to remove an opponent's chip!
This game is a favorite with many kids from when they first receive it at 4 years old, for several years on. A great one for siblings to play together, even if there's a few years between them.
